just wondering

Hi

I was just wondering if you guys on here know the answer to my query.

My husband wants to take a 1 years break from work (but still employed, but no wages). Would we be able to apply for tax credits for the childeren one of which is his and one that is from my last marriage. Can he apply on my behalf for both childern?

Thanks

You would have to make a joint claim for tax credits...neither of you would be applying on the other's behalf....you'd both be jointly responsible for the claim. You can put down both kids if you are the main carers for them. You don't need to be working to claim child tax credits. He would not put his work details on the form unless he is in renumerative work (i.e. he shouldn't put down his work details unless he's getting paid). You would put down your work details if you work.

I thought the same thing. Perhaps one of her children is above the age limit for CTC?

As Dreamer says yes he can but will not receive working tax credit and if you have any childcare element at the moment that would be lost.

If both of you are not working then it will be a great struggle, as you would only receive the child element of tax credit, nothing for you or your partner and as he is effectively taking a "career break" he would not be entitled to other benefits.
  • Hi
I do have 3 childeren one of which now lives with his dad, and I know I can not claim for him.

I'm currently waiting the outcome of overpayment for my eldest two, after applying under reg 26 of the overpayment section on the CTC

So you know that you have been overpaid, yet now you want them to pay you even more?
    Gone ... or have I?

Slightly off-topic, but is that a wise decision, considering that you have debts (£16,000 as at June 2006 according to your signature with a debt free date of June 2011)? How on earth will you service them with little/no income coming in?

Taking a year unpaid is one thing when you are debt-free and/or have the means to support yourself, but expecting the state to pay for such choices is ludicrous!

  • How do you know that I'm unemployed, I'm not!!!!!!!!! I have a good job My husband wages would only cover the child care. I can manage my debts thank you very much Briona. So dont always think people live on benefits.

So dont judge, so many of you do on this board!!!!!

There's no need to jump down my throat – I merely asked a question.

You're right, I don't claim benefits. Equally I didn't assume that you did – I merely questioned the logic behind giving up a job (albeit temporarily) and replacing that income with tax credits when you are in debt...

I apologise if you thought I was having a go at you or implying that you were on benefits.
