Redundancy Planning - how to get out of working notice period?

I have worked for my employer for the last 15 years, since I was 16 years old. We were told 2 weeks ago that 45 out of the 50 people in my department will be made redundant. I have found out that I am not one of the people selected, however I have a feeling that I may be selected by the end of the year so I want to start planning and finding out what I am entitled to.
During this round of redundancies, my employer has stated that everyone must work their notice (most people have 4 month notice periods in their contracts) and they are only entitled to statutory redundancy pay. Normally, anyone who takes sick leave is entitled to full pay, however I know some people that have been signed off with stress (due to the pressure of the procedure) and they are being told that they are only going to be entitled to statutory sick pay.
I am sure my employer is playing by the rules, but I feel that I have worked tirelessly over the last 15 years and when it comes to making me rdundant they are going to pay me a little as possible to get me out the door. What I would like to do is try to find a way to not work my notice period and get this paid in lieu, does anyone have any suggestions of how I might achieve this?

Dont think that there is anyway round it unless you too get signed off sick or ask your hoss if he will do it.
What is in the company sick pay policy or what is in the employees contracts. If it says they are entitled to full pay he cant just change the rules unilaterilly.
Do you have a union. If not get directions from ACASmake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Stat redundancy is (asuming you earn morethan £350pw) is £4725
<22 years old 0.5*350 py so say 5y, leaving 11 at 1.0*£350
Is it worth hanging on for this amount?0 -
