altern.org are absolutely great - IMAP and POP3 access, and very easy to use. I just can't work out how to sign up for new accounts with their new interface. :-(0

It is slick and fast and doesn't have all the annoying graphics you get with hotmail/yahoo etc. But the amount of storage space you get is quite small unless you pay. You can increase the storage a bit with a one-off membership fee, but to get to the storage levels available with hotmail you need to pay a yearly subscription. Depends if you need to keep lots of emails online.
One advantage is that it works with IMAP as standard (even without paying a fee) so you can use with an email program like outlook
Hi All,
I can second FastMail as well, used it for a few years now, subscribing to the Enhanced service, which if paid for in bulk over a few years works out very good for the service you get.
Very reliable, the only time it did go down for more than an hour or so that I know of was when New York had its blackout (in 2003?) it was off for a few hours, another time one of the servers failed and I believe it was off for about 24hrs. That said, the FastMail yeam were great and added an extra month to subscriptions without needing to ask!
The standard 'one off' membership free is probably enough for most people, though they do do compeltely free, but limited accounts also!
Cheers

What I have found useful is to have a domain name where you get a range of email addresses. You can then set it up to forward your mail to any email account ie gmail.
That way if you do change provider, you can keep the same email address
eg myname@myname.co.uk would be set up to forward to myname@gmail.comDo I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????0 -

You need to register one with a company like https://www.1and1.co.uk. You can register a domain from about £1.99/yr but price depends whether you want .co.uk or .com etc. For that price you just get a domain and you can have email addresses that forward to an existing email address. You can pay more and have server space to store emails and web pages etc0
