I had an interview once at the bloke's house, his live in gf made me a coffee until he got back and the office was a 1950s desk in the shell of a room.

    I got it.

    Small companies are like that.

It was too good & easy to be true.

Hubby had a TEXT message at 10pm from the owner last night who says he's lost a contract over the weekend (how odd??) and not to come in this morning.

He has now emailed us this morning to say that yes, there is NO job for hubby but with details of another position that they are recruiting for that unfortunately my hubby isn't qualified for.

How very strange....we are naturally really disappointed but probably more so that the guy didn't have the decency to speak to my hubby in person or even apologise. Some people have no feelings for others. This job offer meant a lot to us.

Back to the drawing board.

Just a long shot, but maybe he reads MSE and recognised himself in this thread? He may not have liked it - hence the text.
I'll have some cheese please, bob.
  • That would be one hell of a long shot!

The thought did cross my mind.

The owner emailed yesterday lunchtime to say that he had employed my husband as he had ASSUMED he would get a large contract and of course over the weekend it transpired that in fact he didn't win the contract so now had no need to take my hubby on. IDIOT.

Now that we have calmed down we both agree that if he can run his business like this then he isn't worth working for anyway.

This is probably the one of the perils of working for a very small company.

What a shame - although I have to say that I did hear faint warning bells as I read your thread..... so not actually too surprised that it fell through (maybe I'm too cynical), but sorry to hear it nevertheless.

Whilst the employer was living in hope that he would win the contract, it dosen't seem fair or professional to expect a potential employee to live in hope too. At the very least, he should have made it clear to your OH that the job was dependent on this contract which had not been finalised.

You're right - they would not have been good to work for anyway.....

I too have had experience of small family-run businesses. This may make you smile; the boss & his wife had six cars between them and it was a very snowy winter. They lived on the edge of the moors and had a one mile long drive but managed to get all six cars (including Mercedes convertible, Range Rover and a BMW) stuck in the snow. When they finally got a even a bleeping snowplough stuck - they wanted my car to go home in (leaving me to go on the train, which wasn't running anyway) - it was a brand new Ford Capri with no weight on the back end. Nah - not going to happen. Never. Ever. Will I work somewhere where the boss thinks that my pay is coming out of his kids' piggybank.

I think a bullet has been dodged on this occasion.

Keep your spirits up and aim higher.

Unlucky and lucky I think. Lesson learned move on and as GTC says above, aim higher.

Good luck to your hubby :D
