Road Tax Change

I propose a new road tax formula.
£10 (base fee to cover admin) + (£50x(kerbweight in metric tons squared) to cover damage caused by heavy vehicles.
eg
motorbike weighing 350kgs pays £16.12/yr
car weighing 1000kgs pays £60/yr.
car weighing 1100kgs pays £70.50/yr
car weighing 1500kgs pays £122.50/yr
car weighing 2000kgs pays £210/yr
motorhome weighing 3000kgs pays £460
CO2 Emmisions are based on fuel use so fuel duty covers that.
Diesel emits (2.7 kg per litre) vs petrol (2.3 kg per litre).
So fuel duty on diesel should be (2.7/2.3)=1.17 times more than petrol (17% more).
In this formula kerbweight used is weight of serviceble/oufitted/ready-to-drive vehicle with 50% fuel plus 1 person weighing 78kgs.
People may say "but I only carry 1 person in my 4x4 why should the smart for 4 with 4 people pay less. The fact is by carrying 4 people it is very efficient per trip so should not pay any extra.
Some may say the rate for the 3000kgs vehicle is stupidly high but that is the relative damage caused over and above the other vehicles.
This is fair. No vehicle gets away with paying no road tax because it emits 1% less CO2 than another. The CO2 is paid for through the CO2 indexed fuel duty and the road damage is paid for with vehicular weight road tax. So no more Ford Fiesta Ecokinetics paying less than motorbike which is ridiculous.

This would be like buying a ferrari and them saying; oh well we found out the V8 broke the drive shafts so we just put this lawnmower engine in instead. 99% of the people wont tell the difference and we save money on drive shaft replacements!!!:rotfl:

Or stay in and write a letter to your MP.
This government needs all the help it can get, so thanks for your thoughts.

Quite like this idea, but it means that a motorhome doing 2000 miles per year (and almost certainly a second vehicle) pays more than say a Mondeo with 4 people and a safe in the boot doing 15,000 miles.
Why not get ride of road tax altogether and put it onto the petrol? The more economical your car (which is often related to its weight), and the less you use it, the less you pay.0 -

and the more that gets stolen, the more fuel tanks get burst, the more tanks that get syphoned, and on occasion people actually get hurt or killed by these thieves. i think there was a farmer last year killed by folk stealing diesel from his tank on his farm.
in theory its a good idea, but too many folk would gladdy go under your car and burst your fuel tank im afraid for free fuel/road tax....work permit granted!0
