Help-fault with laptop-return policy??

Hi,
My ex boyfriend bought me a laptop 9 months ago (he bought it from Comet on his name/address/card details) - but he gave me the receipt/warranty.........the laptop is still in the 12 month warranty....a fault has developed and I was wondering if I could personally go to comet and get the laptop exchanged for another up to the value of the price it was bought for (ideally I want to swap it for a different brand as i don't really like this one anymore - too much hassle with it)......
does my ex need to sort it out as his name/details is on the receipt or can I go and sort it out????
I don't really want to ask him to do it!!
oh yeah - as part of the package there was a free printer (ex kept that) - would I need to take that back as well??
Any advice would be great.....

You are not entitled to a full refund.
All you can get is either
1. A repair
2. Refund taking into account wear and tear
3. Possible replacement comparable to the laptop spec/price (this is good will)0 -

that last one isnt good will at all really
retailers have a choice of all 3, nothing to do with good will, just the one that is the most cost effective to them which will be a repair 99% of the time, and a replacement next, then refund.Back by no demand whatsoever.0 -

the order is repair, replacement, refund
and it only move to the next if the first method has been exhausted or is too costly..

Perhaps bargaingalore meant they dont have to give full refund they could take into account usage and deduct a suitable amount depending on age as it does say partial refund0

yep, probably, i was just correcting the bit about replacements being good will, thats itBack by no demand whatsoever.0 -
The warranty itself is on the laptop, it's not attached to the purchaser. Therefore you can take it to Comet to request a repair as long as you have proof of purchase. If they were to replace it then again this shouldn't be a problem as you have the receipt.
However, if they were to refund it then the refund would go back onto your boyfriend's card. And to have a full refund all items would need to be returned including the printer.
As pointed out in previous posts the retailer can provide a remedy in the form of a repair, replacement, refund or partial refund.
My advice would be to ask Comet for a replacement and explain to them why you think you are entitled to one. You mention "too much hassle with it", so presumably you have had previous faults? If you have then this will add wait to a request for a replacement. If this is the first fault then the chances are Comet will offer a repair. Only thing you can do to get a definitive answer is to speak to someone at Comet.0 -
As you can not give the printer back this may actually go against you, its after all part of the packaged
I think at best a repair or a partial refund less printer price0 -
Comet normally advice you to call the manufacturer directly as they will repair it on behalf of the retailer (service agreement between comet & laptop manufacturer).
Give them a call and they will probably arrange for a courier to pick up the laptop from your home, get it repaired and returned to you. Not as good as an exchange but at least you don't have the hassle of returning to the store.0
