motability car needed quickly!

Options
Hello all,
my partner suffers from spinal problems and gets HRM.
As he can no longer drive we have been using my old car to take him to hospital apps and stuff.
My car has just failed its MOT and is too costly to repair.
we have considered a motability car previously but as my partner does not go out much we decided against it.
Patner is due to go in for surgery next month and so we need a car...quickly
what is the fastest you have managed to get a motability car?
no adaptions needed.

My son's was four weeks, start to finish (Peugot). But he went for one that they had to get in. If you choose one that the dealer already has in stock, maybe it would be quicker?

I believe much of the delay was in sorting out the paperwork with motability and jobcentre plus (who had to validate the forms to say he was entitled to HRM). I suppose that if you explain this is an emergency, they might be able to speed it up by fax? I don't know. Maybe phone round a few Motability dealerships and see what they say?

Could you not hire a car for the moment and when surgery is all over, take your time and go see the dealership.

    Hi,

As others have said, the only real 'quick' way once the paperwork has been sorted is to order a vehicle that is in group stock. Waiting for a 'new build' vehicle could take weeks if not months. However what is in group stock may only be a 'bog standard' vehicle, you may have to forego various optional extras/accessories. It is also quite rare, if you need an automatic, to find one quickly as these are often built to order (unless you find one someone else has cancelled).

Also, should you go down this path of whatever is quickest, you could well be making a big and costly mistake. It does take time to choose a car, particularly for people with disabilities. You have to consider such as access/egress, seat height, comfort, whether a wheelchair needs to be carried, if so can the vehicle carry the wheelchair. Will a hoist or ramps be needed and can these fit the car.

I wish you luck, but you do need to choose the right car for your partners disability. Remember you will have the car for the next three years and if you choose the wrong one it is either 3 years of discomfort for him or if Motability permit it, being hit in the wallet having to do an early termination of a lease.

    Thanks,
we have previously been and tried and test drove several cars and have a small short list.
he is a stick user not a wheeelchair user so that makes it a little easier.
I just phoned a few dealers and had "how longs a piece of string"
    not encouraging really.
we should have done this ages ago but my OH has always tried to be positive that he would get better not worse...but that is not to be it seems:(
  • My son got his car after about a week, although it was a brand new model the dealer had it in stock,if this is the case it only takes as long as the paperwork

I was mystery shopping cars this week-time for getting the car varied from one week (for those in stock within the dealer's group) to 8.5 months !! I'd ring the dealers who sell your short list cars and see who has got what in stock. (The ones who are hedging almost certainly don't have them in stock) Might even be worth going to a dealer a bit out of your area although that might bring up servicing issues.

I got a motability car, in our chosen colour, for my son in a week. It was in stock in another branch and everything was sorted out very quickly.

It's a Nissan Note, five door, 1.6 engine. An absolute dream to drive! Seats are high enough without being too high, there is room for my son's wheelchair as well as shopping in the boot, and the doors open really wide. It's quite economical and has plenty of storage.

As Tally-Ho said, though, it is a big decision and should be made carefully. Good luck x
