Kerala - any insight?

Only a few days before we're of on our hols - still looking for any advice/info - we're staying a mile from Kovalem.

I have few friends in Kerela and their advice is to use this official government website

I was told not to miss Varkala - about 30 (50 KM) miles from thiruvanathapuram or closer from kavala.
The other tip is to go to back waters - hire a boat house and enjoy!

I read them before we booked - they look very positive - did you find it as good? What about shopping, anything we should make sure we bring back?
