Maureen Rosemary

I am travelling to USA in four weeks time using car and rail travel. Trouble is when I have enquired about hiring a car I am being charged double the hire rate when I wish to pick up a car in one city and drop it in another 3/4 days later. Is there any way I can overcome this or does anyone know a company that charges less for one way travel than others?
Thanks.

Have you looked at Dollar? Their rates for one-way are around $40 per day. Not cheap, but better than Avis at more than $100 per day.

Most rental companies will charge a one-way fee if dropping the car at a differing city to the pick-up one. The fee will usually depend on how far apart the two cities are.
Some companies waive the one-way fee if dropping off within the same state : i.e Alamo within Florida or California.
