Dear MSE - Please stop with the Daily Wail style journalism

Dear MSE,

I'm writing this in a forum post, just so other people can comment. With regards to the latest "shock horror post" that you seem to enjoy posting, about the "Travel Insurance Trap". If people haven't read it, it is here.

http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/insurance/2009/07/avoid-the-250-travel-insurance-trap

Now, stickied on the top of this forum is the New York thread. If you actually had bothered to read it, you'd realise it is extremely rare that people go on holiday to New York City, for four consecutive weeks.

Yes, people here know that Travel Insurance is cheaper if you buy separately, and i'm sure 90% of people who book on last minute would notice £250 extra added onto a holiday.

I've just done some research myself, and for a 1 week holiday for the same family of 4, which is much more probably (but is NYC a holiday destination for families, as much as beach resorts in Europe are is another debatable thing), the travel insurance is £127.17, which albeit still expensive, and isn't as much of a "shout" for a shock headline, compares with columbus single trip family policy at £55.78, but is nowhere near the £254 vs £24 because you compared a Single Trip family policy from last minute, with a basic europe only policy. It's like comparing an apple to a pear. They are NOT the same thing!

I enjoy this website, I've found out loads of good information, but seriously, stop with the shock tactics, daily mail style of journalism, and I might actually take notice, and agree, than have to complain, about the lack of proper research!

4 weeks in NYC is my dream, but it isn't a family holiday, and if you read the NYC thread, you'd see why.

M

I agree about the daily mail style of journalism being bad, but have take a 2 week holiday with my family to New York (and surrounding area), at the time the kids were 7 & 3!

very rare though as a 2 week break, as a city break isn't as cheap as say a break on a spanish island.

Like for like comparison is how professional journalism should be done, not shock tactics and comparing a £24 policy, that is for one region, with another policy, that is something totally different.

On a more general note, Archna is noted in the above article as a Travel Analyst. In other news articles, she is noted as Energy Analyst, Telecoms Analyst and Shopping Analyst!

Whilst I am sure that her research in all areas is excellent, it sounds very silly, and actually gives less journalistic value to her work, when she is given a different title depending on what she is commenting on.

I think there are some ;)valid points above - we're developing our news service and its a very different style as normally MSE guides are weeks or months in the making and these are short and snappy. Thanks for the feedback

As for titles - I agree - its often bugs me that BBC correspondents titles change day after day - we'll take a look and try and come up with something more consistent
