Bamboo flooring

  • Hi, I fitted a bamboo floor in my bathroom last oct., after checking out whether it was o.k to go in a bathroom. Every supplier I contacted assured me it was, as long as you use the vertical b.b.
I chose my supplier and again verbally and using e-mail checked that it was o.k in the bathroom.
When it came to fit it I emailed and checked yet again to see if there were any tips if it needed anything special for putting in the bathroom and if it needed glueing, as some places said it did, but he had'nt given any info. He said glue it with silicone glue along the tongue in groove. (It went down beautifully I've never done anything like that before and impressed myself.)
Before too long, where the condensation drips off the toilet, where a wet flannel has been regularly allowed to drip off the edge of the sink, (despite all my protests to the family!) and also in places that get wet where people walk when they get out of the bath, it has soaked in, at the ends and sides of the planks. Around the toilet esp. it looks horrible, it has gone all dark. (I keep an old towel there to mop the floor with, (not what I had in mind and spoils the look somewhat!)
I got in touch with the supplier and he said,' allow it to dry out and varnish it, or silicon seal along plank edges.
Over winter these areas either a. don't dry out. or b. you can't tell if they've dried out as the stain is in the b.b. Is it wet or is it stain? It would be pointless to seal in the wet. Anyway, why did'nt he say when I first made enquiries, 'seal the floor with varnish' or even 'seal the cut ends when using in a bathroom.'
I've recently got back in touch and sent lots of pictures of my ruined bathroom floor, he says 'I've never known that to happen before and neither has my supplier, I've sent pictures to them to see what they think.I also told him I either want a refund or a replacement. Left it over Easter and called him yesterday. He said he'd spoken to his supplier (in China) and sent the pictures and would be in touch again.
By the way, you can now get, skirting, stair risers and things to put in doorways etc.
    UPDATE
Sorry this is such a long post, I started it earlier today, but had trouble logging on, so could'nt post. Anyway, this afternoon I got a call from my supplier, he said his supplier was'nt being very helpful, but that he (my supplier) WILL GIVE ME A FULL REFUND. As if he replaced it the same would be likely to happen again. He also said that the Chinese suppliers originally gave a guarantee with bamboo for in wet areas, but now are reluctant to do so, (still have one for dry areas though).
    Hope this has helped.
  • Hi
When I laid my laminate floor in the bathroom, somebody told me about Boat Varnish apparently its the best thing to use with any wooden floors especially in the kitchen/bathroom area.
It seals the wood and makes it waterproof, and then you just re-apply every couple of years, I found it works a treat, my floor looks as good as new, and its been down for quite a few years now, and I have 2 kids that are always soaking the bathroom floor......

    Hope this helps

Thats why I asked and asked if it needed anything on it, I've used boat varnish before, but everyone in the business said 'no', so I thought 'it must be ok then.
  • I personally wouldn't use any kind of wood in a bathroom. No matter what you do water will get in eventually.I would use an aqualoc type laminate that is suitable for wet areas. If you do insist on using wood, then i would use a microporous type varnish that keeps water out but lets moisture escape.Remember, wood needs to breath and move.
  • Bamboo it is'nt wood, its a fast growing grass, but you're proberbly still right about it needing to breathe and move, you need to leave an expansion gap.
  • I know it's grass but it has the properties of wood,i.e. cells that soak up water. There's only really man made products, produced with waterproof glue that are suitable and of course any timber that is naturally resistant to water such as teak for example but these tend to be very pricey.
