Scented tree/shrub challenge
Posting this for a no-computer neighbour, knowing that msers will come up trumps...again!:D
An ageing 9' cypress[which she never liked]is dying in her small, exquisitely kept back garden. Suggestions please for a tall-ish, columnar, EVERGREEN, scented if poss., replacement.
All ideas will be very welcome.

[FONT=arial,sans-serif][SIZE=-1]Eucryphia x nymansensis 'Nymansay'
Or a bamboo, e.g arundinaria nitida 'Fountain bamboo'
Or a gum, eucalyptus niphophila 'Snow gum'
Or yew, taxus baccata 'Fastigiata'
Or juniperus scopulorum 'Skyrocket'
Or a holly, ilex aquifolium 'Green Pillar'
As suggested by Graham Stuart Thomas!

Hmm evergreen, columnar and scented? The immediate thought I had was a bay but that is probably too wide spreading and not scented in the sense she means - it will get tall enough and maybe there are upright versions these days and they will tolerate shaping.Adventure before Dementia!0

Viburnum bodnantense 'Dawn' can be kept pretty columnar & it smells good, but it falls at the last fence, being deciduous. Early into leaf though.:D0

I really like Viburnums in general as they are such good dooers and easy to find in this country. In this garden we have many evergreen shrubs but only a couple have perfume I think. These are Mahonia and Witch Hazel but they flower in winter. My Viburnum is V.Tinus which has evergreen leaves and which flowers for a long time, Winter to Spring. Our Choisya has also been a pleasure for the past few years as it is quite tall now and it's evergreen (lovely colour) with a small white flower and very pleasant perfume.0 -
Pittosporum tenuifolium is evergreen and scented, but alas not columnar. :rolleyes:0

Well, I wondered about that, because it's so easy to prune into a shape, but I wasn't sure if there'd be any flowers with regular clipping. I can't smell its flowers much anyway, but others say they are pleasant-smelling.0 -
Thankyou all so much. My apologies for not doing so earlier. but in weeks of computer/phone probs generally, yesterday's new one was non-working mouse.
I will pass these on.CAP[UK]for FREE EXPERT DEBT &BUDGET HELP:
