I work job share 2 .5 days per week and I don't work extra hours in holidays etc.

It's okay but would prefer part time

  • I'm in a similar situation to you, trying to find a part time job that will still fit in with school times and holiday times.
I don't really have any childcare options, except for the clubs that are run in the school holidays. I don't really want to work in the school holidays as I think I'd just be earning money to pay for childcare and missing out on seeing the children having fun.

It really is difficult to find anything suitable. I always check the council website for school jobs each week, that's quite a good place to try.
I can imagine that with a job share it depends on who you are sharing it with, it could work out really well or could be a nightmare.

Good luck with your search, I'd start looking when I'd finished my studies if I was you.

I was lucky when I went back to work as I was able to fit my hours around my home life pretty much and I had friends and family to pick up the children if necessary.

I did find though, like conradmum, that my job share partners took advantage and did less and less. I actually worked at the same time as them (it was more a role split than time split situation) so once I found my feet I did stand them firmly on the ground and if I found work on my desk in the morning that I felt should and could have been completed by someone else the day before, it simply went back to them and they had to explain to the boss why it wasn't done.

Also, I found they could be unreasonable about holiday time. I had to cover all their holiday time and they knew I didn't want to work much of the school holidays. They also knew they were supposed to check with me that I could cover (it was a huge jump going from 12 hours a week to doing a full week and I did have a life outside of work) but often didn't. At first, I rearranged things but this meant letting other people down. After a while I simply took the time off as well and informed the boss that I had not been asked if I could cover the days and in fact I could not. I wouldn't have minded so much but I tried to be as flexible as I could, even if it sometimes meant going out early in the morning to collect my dad (who didn't drive) and bringing him back to my house for the day and then taking him home again.

After the main protagonist left, things really settled and I am now actually in the same job but full time.

    I wouldn't do a job share again.

Thanks I think that would be my best option. I really want to finish the course having started it, and college rules don't allow for enrolling twice on same course in the event thing didn't work out.
I was also thinking I worked evenings till son was 2.5, but after that I've been a SAHM or worked school dinners, so he's always had all holidays with me at home. It would be nice to think daughter could also have a year or two of having me at home also in the hols. The great thing about college is it's shut when the schools are. My 2 quite like childcare so I'll keep using it occassionally, to help me out if I need it, and also so it doesn't come as a shell-shock to them eventually when I return to work. I take on board what you've all said about job-sharing and try to steer away.
    Thanks everyone for their in-put.
Still haven't decided whether a few full days or a 10-2 job is better though :D

    Hi
Have you thought about enquiring at the college about admin vacancies? Ask if you could leave your name and be considered for any jobs going. Although they don't do exactly the same weeks as schools they are similar. There will likely to be job shares and p/time vacancies arise - you could point out how they have trained you to be suitable for the job. Also, there are various schools within each college - you could show your face to the main office at each. Good luck.

Thanks but I don't really want supermarket or shop work though. The reason why is you tend (round here at least) to get evenings/weekends/bank holiday work in with your hours. Evenings are not possible due to hubbys job and I prefer to spend the other times with the family.

Spendless I've re-read my post and realise it was rubbish really. Posted one night when I was shattered, sorry if it sounded off hand.

Can completely understand when you don't want evening or weekend work.

I work for the NHS 2 days a week and do an extra day when hubby is off as he is a school teacher.

The NHS do tend to be flexible with part time hours. They also can offer term time working. We have 2 women in our dept that do this. You could have a look on the NHS website as there are always plenty of jobs in admin or care etc

Thanks. I hadn't thought of NHS. Do you need to know medical terminology though?
Having thought about it- I've worked out my ideal hours they would be 3 days a week 9ish-3ish. Then I could do my own pick ups and drop offs. If one of the days was Monday then I'd get all the bank hol mondays off that fall in school hols and would reduce how many days off me and hubby need to take, we could jsut occassionally use holiday childcare to make sure we took 'priority' for the next lot of school hols. Now just to look for the job that matches that criteria :D
