we have recently bought sleeping bags (tesco value £4ish) and fleeces (asda smart price £2) they also had camping stoves, airbeds and tents0

Tesco have some inexpensive tents on offer. But I would agree with other posters and try and get one free/borrow if you suspect that camping may not be your partners thing. Don't waste your money with sleeping bags but I second airbeds and bring sheets and duvets (assuming that you will have the use of a car/van). Try a camping site reasonably close to home in case it all goes badly wrong and go for a couple of nights at first.
Most camp sites now are very well organised and come with everything (shop, washing & toilet blocks, restaurants etc). Do any of your friends/relatives go camping? In a few years your kids will probably be joining brownies/scouts, getting them started now won't do them any harm.
Above all have fun!0 -
Get a tent you can stand up in. Makes all the difference. I got mine cheap off ebay.0

I love the Camping and Caravnning club - lovely people, v helpful (we found the Caravan club too snobby for words, but others, I'm sure like it!). Try this page on their website!Reason for edit? Can spell, can't type!0 -
If you want to try it out without too much commitment I would recommend ..

They are insulated wooden hutsIt's a great idea and I think they will catch on with people like me that can't be doing with the faff of setting up a tent !

Clothes pegs, string and bin liners - all have 101 uses when camping! Oh, and don't forget a mallet!"A bank is a place that will lend you money if you can prove that you don't need it." :wall:

Hi
Take a bit more than a sleeping bag for your bedding. I put a thin rug or blanket under my airbed and a fleece blanket over the airbed. If you don't have any insulation between you and the earth you will get cold. An airbed doesn't count as insulation.
As much as I love camping there is nothing worse than being cold during the night.
Also as said above I strongly recommend www.ukcampsite.co.uk lots of experienced campers that will advise you on anything and everything about camping !
In terms of a tent I'd suggest 6 berth minimum as tent manufacturers definition of a berth is very small. Be careful about buying a tent off ebay. There are some bargains to be had but there is also alot of expensive rubbish.
Enjoy camping !

I've been camping, but always had a yearning to sample the Ray Mears life style like here... http://www.bearclawbushcraft.co.uk/ - but only in summer time0
