Pay US dollar cheque into bank account

Hi
I recently paid a dollar cheque from Clickbank into my bank account at Natwest.
They did not tell me at the time about the exchange rate or charges but when the letter came about it I found that they gave me a poor exchange rate and also had a rip off charge of £10.50 (although they called it a Commission Charge). I rang them and the lady who answered said that was the charge up to £500 and then it was more. She seemed quite apologetic and agreed that it was a rip-off. She could not suggest any way round it.
So does anyone know a good way to pay in US dollar cheques and get English money out without being ripped off? I even tried Travelex but they don't do it.
This is my first post and if this is the wrong forum just tell me where the right one is. Thanks
All the best
Jack
