Am I safe to post parcel?

I sold a pair of kids shoes and buyer said she had reached her paypal spending limit so asked me if i would wait a few days for the limit to rise again. After a few days she messages me saying her limit hasnt gone up so could she pay by cheque which would be guarenteed so i could post the shoes as soon as Id banked as it was her daughters birthday the following saturday(today) and she wanted the shoes for then.

I replied saying I always wait for cheques to clear before posting but if she wanted to send postal orders I would post out the same day I receive them. Today I get a cheque in the post. With it came a letter. Her daughters birthday as now changed to wednesday and could I make sure she gets the shoes for then if possible. What I dont understand though is also included in the letter was all her bank card details, start date, expirey date, card number, name on the card.

Can she cancel the cheque? will it be safe to post the shoes now, I dont always wait for cheques to clear but no one has asked me to do it before, its always been my choice not when asked to and always for small amounts of money not £20.

Why has she given me all her bank card details? what do I need them for apart from maybe doing her online shopping for her?

Maybe she is providing the details for her cheque quarentee card, if it is this type of card then the cheque should clear no matter what, as far as I am aware anyway. But I would wait till someone else comes along. I wouldnt post until I knwo for sure that it will be this.

Plus you cannot guaretee that they will be there in time anyway, that bits up to the mail service unless she payed for next day delivery

A cheque can be recalled so you must decide whether or not to chance it. The bank card details are immaterial, even if you wrote them all the back of the cheque they may well be wrong as you haven't had the card to verify them.

    I agree with Soo
cheque guarantee cards (as far as I am aware) only cover businesses and only cover you if you saw the card and witnessed her sign the cheque (if you didnt see her sign the cheque you are supposed to get her to sign the back of the cheque in your presence). Personally I wouldnt risk it if she has changed the date of her daughters birthday!!
    Good luck

Just bank the cheque and wait for it to clear. Send the parcel out then. Maybe they just changed the day they were to celebrate their daughters birthday. And no the details don't guarentee it but i am pretty sure that the process of clearance is speeded up.

Maybe i am wrong but I remember at a place I once worked we used to request their card details written on the back. Wonder why?

  • Thanks for all your replies. The details where also wrote on the back of the cheque. I think I will still put off posting until the cheques cleared. Ive just noticed the name on the cheque and the name of the buyer are different so for that reason alone I will wait for the money to clear.

Cheque cards can cover any transaction (personal or business) but the payee must see the cheque signed and the card to compare the signature. Cheque cards details written on by the drawer are worthless.
