Withholding a rent payment

Hi,
My wife and I are in month 11 of a 12month tenancy on a house. Over the last 5 weeks we have experienced a lot of inconvenience due to some water-related problems with the house - namely a mains water leak and collapsed drain under the house. Long-story-short, the place has been horrible to live in, with no working kitchen sink, no dishwasher, floor-boards taken up, excavation taking place in the hallway, our furniture moved to the garage, constant damp-air as the exposed earth dries out, etc, etc.
We decided that we wanted compensation for all the hassle and made an offer to the landlord (through our agent) for a 50% rent reduction for the last month. The landlord has refused this, saying we must pay full rent (or she'll pursue it legally) and that any compensation should be done through her Sainsburys landlords insurance policy. We disagreed and have held back our last rent payment. Our agent told us today that there is an offer of £75 compensation from the landlord (don't know if this is part of an insurance pay-out.) Either way, we cannot accept that as being sufficient compensation.
Can anyone tell me what I should do here to protect ourselves? We just want fair compensation for what we have put up with. Should I pay up the rent, make the half payment, or do nothing and wait for the landlord to claim back the rent through the deposit protection service and therefore go to adjudication?
