20 years old and I've never cashed in a cheque before.
How do I do this?
Just walk in to my local bank (RBS) and give them the cheque...?

walk into a bank , hand them your bank account and cheque, they do the rest. Should take 3 working days to clear.
p.s. make sure they give you a receipt.Mortgage Start jun 2007 £88500 Outstanding Balance £51000
Overpayments 2007 Nil 2008 £1040 2009 £7853 2010 £10000 2011 aiming for £18000 (6k so far)

i paid a cheque in on thursday (natwest cheque) to a rbs account, both accounts held in same city. Cheque was available to withdraw sat. Curious to say the least! For everthing else there's mastercard.
For clampers there's Barclaycard.0 -
Does it have to be my local branch or can I go into any RBS branch to cash in the cheque?0

Well any branch of rbs (do u bank with them?)will do, just give them ur debit card etc and ur not actually cashing the cheque since it has to clear first..For everthing else there's mastercard.

just to be sure
-you have a cheque with your name as the payee?
-you have a bank account in your name (i.e. the same as the cheque?)
in general you can't walk into a bank and ask for cash from the cheque but you can pay the cheque into your bank account... you usually need a 'paying in slip' but this varies a bit from bank to bank.... some banks will swipe your debit card and then credit the cheque to your a/c.
paying in slips are usually provided by your own bank and are sometimes at the end of your cheque book (if you have one); otherwise banks may provide blank ones that you need to fill in with your a/c details.
once the cheque has been deposited into your bank account, unless you have sufficient other funds already there you will need to wait until the cheque 'clears' (4 working days) before you can actualy withdraw the cash from your a/c in the usual way.
some banks will charge for paying in unless they are your own bank or a branch of the bank that the cheque is from.0 -

Yup. Cheque is in my name and is same as my bank account.
I won't be looking to exchange the cheque for cash over the counter, maybe I worded it wrong. I just want to hand in the cheque and the money to appear in my account after x working days.0 -
unless its scally fax then youl be looking at a week -ten days
I assume you mean Halifax? Just like every other high street bank Halifax Bank of Scotland follow the 2-4-6 standard. In fact, pay in a cheque over the counter before 5pm into a current account and they will do you one better with the cheque clearing by 9am on the 3rd working day.
Other means of paying in (e.g. ATM) and different types of accounts may have longer clearing times but most conform to 2-4-6.Anything I post is my opinion, so from time to time I may be wrong. I try to provide answers based in fact, however I don't know everything, so (like all posters on MSE), take what I say with a pinch of salt.0 -
At Halifax they now have special atms inside you can just feed the cheque into, it scans it, asks you to confirm the amount then insert your debit card, and mine "cleared" in under 24hours that way.
I like machines to do things for me, still a bit shy of talking to customer service people when I don't have to, probably because I've worked in customer service for years and know how easy it is to take the grump out on a customer ;p
