Tell me what happened.!!

Last night I downloaded "Filmloop Album" from Photobucket but after trying it I decided I did not want it and started to uninstall it but it stopped uninstalling not long after starting and left a little window on screen displaying the action it was doing, I waited and waited before realising it had stopped so I switched my computer off then on again but when it had re-booted all text had turned to symbols, everwhere had symbols instead of text, I couldn't put it right with my the little knowledge I have of computers so I just re-formatted my hard disc and put it back to factory settings. What could have happened.? Could the partial uninstall of the Filmloop Album messed up some of the memory in my computer.?
