student finance application!!

Options
Hi there,

I am 28 and have two children and have been a single parent for two years, although I have a partner who lives with his brother, but they are selling their flat so that he can come and live with us.

I have decided to become a full time student from september and am about to apply for my student finance but knowing that in the next 3 months ish when he moves in, I am concerned about claiming as a single parent at the moment as I obviously wont be in a few months. Now he only earns 1k per month so not going to make a lot of difference in the income side of things cos I am guessing I will be leaving my job that I only earn 7k per year at the moment but I'm not sure what the time table is and/ or if its worth it financially? So when it comes to asking about my income, do I include it or not? Or just change my circumstances at a later date? I'm a bit confused with it all as I've never done this before!

Please be kind as I am just trying to do what is best....

Thanks x

ok... you say he is selling the flat - do they have a buyer? it could takes months and months. i have been in similar situ with things changing - but only from my kids maintenance payments. Student finance told me when i apply to apply as things are on that day - then inform them of changes once they have happened. infact i got and sent back my change of circumstance form today. have you used the direct gov website to see what impact his wage will have on you? maybe worth a go then you know where you stand financially

You really need to read through the guidance notes that come with the application as it will all become much clearer. Basically you need to declare your household's income including your unearned taxable income. Unearned means don't declare your current wages.

As your boyfriend is not currently part of your household you don't need to include him. However you will need to fill in a change of circumstances form as soon as he does move in. Depending on timescales this may slow down your application but you are already a bit late in applying anyway, so be prepared not to see any money until perhaps October or November.
