    avast or avg, both free..

microsoft defender and ad-aware for anti-spyware, both free.

If you want outbound firewall protection, zonealarm, kerio, or sygate, all free..

There are more options in the security and spyware sticky threads at the top of this page..
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Free AV progs can be fine but tend to be system hogging, glitchy and only update once or twice a week.

THE BEST ! IMHO, is NOD32

    https://secure.nod32uk.com/order/category.asp?intCategoryId=7

Costs only £23 a year which is under 50p a week for a very low system usage in the background AV that misses nothing .

Trial version for your system available here

    http://www.nod32uk.com/download/download.htm

Consise setup settings and advise available here

    http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=37509

It takes a little work to get it set up to its optimum but worth the effort for an AV which updates as many as 7-8 times a day as soon as new info becomes available .

Its advanced heuteristic scanning stops anything that looks like a virus and asks for advice !

    PS ,
I have given no click through or referer link so stand to make nothing from this recommendation !

AVG is free and not a resource hog despite what the last poster says

AVG has had major update problems in the past which has left users unprotected !

Not wanting to get involved in a slanging match with a Grisoft officiando I would respectfully submit that AV prog firms ALLWAYS look after paying customers first, that is why there is a Grisoft paid for version .

IMHO less than 50p a week , which can be cut in half again by a 3 year subscription is a small price to pay for what is regarded as probably THE BEST AV available by the likes of Steve Gibson etc !

I have never had a virus on my PC in the last 3 years but have had hundreds blocked !

Totally agree. Have run with AVG (free) + Ad - aware for the last few years now - with no problems that they didn't solve. And that included a substantial period with a son who imported more viruses than enough. Fortunately now busy infecting his Uni system.

Add on Spyware Blaster and SpyBot Search & Destroy, for good measure.

    But don't pay for any.

Lol @ Steve Gibson now theres an Oxymoron.

AVG is not a Hogger at all and dont forget any web update can fail depending
on the servers load so its hit and miss with any AV but its free and why not.

Mcafee is the better of the big 2 when it comes to paying for AV, norton is a pain in the !!!!!!. £45 is the goind rate but if you get down to PCworld yeah I know i cant belive im telling you to go to PCW, they usually have it on offer for about £19 for the internet security suite. just dont install the privacy service its stupid and a pain int he !!!!!!.

alternativly there are places you can get it for free if you know where to look.

Believe me go with AVG. Updates every day. Not a single virus in the past thre years has got through it.
