One wedding I went to, had lovehearts tied in pretty net bags, as favours. They bought the sweets in bulk off the internet and made the bags themselves. They were great, must have been cheap and they were a talking point at the table.

I agree with the Christmas pudding suggestion... my mum makes loads every Christmas (well, October half term), she then saves some for throughout the year, including for the summer and they taste amazing! Could be a bit novel and your parents could make a load of them. Serve with cream or custard?

Congratulations and have fun with the planning.

Have you considered artificial flowers? I got mine from Sarah's Flowers and can't recommend them highly enough. They have cream Gerbera's and I'm sure they'll make you up something you had in mind if you contact them. See here. You can either keep them as a keepsake or sell them on and make some money back. This is what I plan to do with mine.

What a brilliant idea- I was considering artificial flowers (my dad works at a florist's wholesalers which sells silk flowers. Can anyone say the word Staff Discount!) Anyhoo, I was considering giving them to a charity shop afterwards but I'm guessing you could sell them on Ebay and actually get some money back! Fab idea

Good luck with wedding plans Mrsburton2be! :D

Mrs Burton to be congrats - my fiance proposed to me on Christmas Day too!

The in laws to be are making our cake, and we are going to have three tiers - one raspberry sponge, one chocolate and undecided, but possibly lemon.I have got a Maisie Fantasie book, and you can get some designer cake maker books showing you how to make wedding cakes on Amazon quite cheaply, some fab ideas and recipes!

I am going to use an online florist - do a search on them - some have no minimum order, and i have seen cream gerberas in the current selection. There's no reason why you can't have wrist corsages or similar instead of button holes, or choose something other than flowers for them to wear to 'identify' them. Again you can get books for insipration - try the library if you have a decent local one!

-The cake we are planning on serving as a desert so I would like it to be a bit more exciting than fruit cake? I was considering asking my Mum and Dad to make it to get them a bit more involved and because to buy one is stupidly expensive!
What about this cake recipe?

Seems quite simple to make. You could change the colour of the middle layer to suit your scheme and has a different flavour cake for each layer so should keep everyone happy! :D

-The favours, I haven't a clue where to start. I really like the flower seed idea or something like that but I have 150 guests and no budget really for this? I also wanted to get like a goody bag for about 30 children that will be there to keep them occupied.

Check out Ebay for Organza bags - approx £4 in postage for 50 but I'm sure if you are buying more than one lot the buyer will combine postage..
eg. HERE but obviously you can find one's which match your colour scheme. So approx £12

Then you have to find something to put in 'em...
Mini Love hearts? £16.50
Mini Chocolate hearts? £9.99
heart shaped jelly beans? £9.48

just a few ideas...

Have you thought about having Sky lanterns as a finale to the wedding instead of fireworks??

There make a stunning alternative and are really cheap compared to fireworks.

Google - 'the sky lantern experience' for a good example.

Cheers

And they might look great but they are really bad for the environment.

Sparklers outdoors for guests and yourselves as well? I don't think a venue would say no to those. There is no noise, they're hand held and used properly don't cause problems. It is advisable to get your venue to provide a bucket of water for spent wires though.

Hi everyone

I hope you dont mind me posting on this thread, but I'm writing a feature for a top weekly glossy magazine about couples who've arranged their weddings for under £5000 by doing it in unusual ways - like going to Vegas/Gretna Green or asking all their friends and family to buy part of the wedding rather than a wedding gift. Or maybe you bartered down every aspect of your wedding or got stuff second hand.

Whatever your story, if you managed to arrange your wedding for under £5000, please get in touch - we can offer a fee if you take part in the final piece. Please feel free to email me at jo_adnitt@ipcmedia.com

Thanks

£5k ??? !!! ??? Not exactly a challenge or unusual.... this one is far more interesting.... http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1824953
