Washing machine design fault but out of warranty period

Options
Hi all,

There has been a nasty leak from under the washing machine for a while, and finally i managed to have a look at it. It looks like a design fault. There's a plastic hose coming from the drum connecting to the front bottom of the machine where you have the debris filter. The hose had melted from heat due to the heat from the stone that's balancing the drum.

I bought the machine in april 2007 without any extended warranty so whatever warranty it had must have expired by now. Question is, would Samsung own up to the fact that it's due to their poor design and repair/replace it or would they give me hell trying to claim for it?

Other alternatives are:

1- repairing it myself by fixing the leak and insulating it with some kitchen foil
2- claiming from contents insurance

What do u reckon moneysavers?

home insurance will not pay for it.

Can you cut the hose down and re fix it?

    Have you emptied the filter

Hi, yes i cleaned the filter, but the problem is in the hose. I can repair it, but i was wondering if i could get them to do it instead, since it's not my fault that it broke, due to the poor design.

Why would home contents insurance not cover it? I'm not talking about home insurance.

Home insurance does not cover for mechanical breakdown or wear and tear.

It covers specific perils such as fire, flood, theft etc

Have you tried contacting the company you bought it from?

You can make a claim under the Sale of Goods due to an inherient fault (if you can prove it). Although claiming that it has not lasted a reasonable amount of time is generally easier to prove. After the first 6 months the burden of proof is on the purchaser, therefore you would need to provide evidence of the fault and it's cause.

Generally white goods are designed to last several years. 2 years and 2 months is not long enough based on normal domestic use.

Contacting Samsung also might be a good idea incase it is a known fault. But unless they have had a product recall they probally won't admit it.

Also you could try talking to the manufacturer direct, they will know if it is caused by a design issue for sure.
