Bad smell - who to report to?

There has been a bad smell in my area for a few weeks now. Sort of like dog poo when you accidentally stand in it:eek: but worse. It comes and goes a bit. I've checked around and no obvious animal corpses etc...anyone got any idea who I should report this to? Or even any idea what it might be? It's not just me, the neighbours are starting to notice too...

Is it sewerage by any chance? It could be a blocked sewer and if so, it's the responsibility of NI Water.Northern Ireland club member No 382 :j0 -
I would initially have to agree with Money_Grabber that its a blocked sewer, but as you said it "comes and goes a bit", I suspect it could be dog poo in someones back yard, especially with this heat we've been having. A similar thing happened in my area last year when it was hot and for days we wondered what it was. Turned out it was a neighbour who didn't bother cleaning up the dog mess in his back yard and every time the wind blew from his house you smelt it.
Any neighbours nearby who own dogs?0 -
We do have neighbours with dogs but they are def cleaned up after
thanks Pretani. t could be a blocked sewer possibly but I tend to associate blocked sewers more with damp smells, this is more of a spraying the fields type smell
I phoned BCC today and spoke with someone pretty helpful (actually I have found the council to be good generally on a few different issues) so I'm hoping they'll take some action. Thanks everyone for responding.
My biggest worry is that it is something (or god forbid someone) rotting somewhere. Have spent the last few days running through in my mind when I've last seen various neighbours although because my area has some students in it, some of the houses are lying empty at this time of year anyway...0 -

Aha but I am originally a country type so I know all this, but i also know it doesn't last for more than a couple of days and that if the fields haven't been sprayed and you can smell it then there's something wrong0 -
but could you say you seen it before you smelt it? That's when you can really say you come from the country:rotfl:
[I'm told it looks slightly green in colour, like a green fog]0 -
OK I have never seen the fields being sprayed
maybe I'm not such a country girl after all.
So I spoke to a very nice and helpful lady from BCC who informed me that they were rat-baiting in the area a couple of weeks ago at the request of some local residents. So I'm guessing that the conclusion that it was something dead was the right one. Hopefully the heavy rain this morning will have washed it all away but if not I have to get back to her to get the sewers flushed and eliminate that as a cause of the smell.
I have to say BCC are really on fire these days as far as I'm concerned. This was my third time being in touch lately (once about a stray dog, once about recycling and then this) and they were excellent every time. Full marks!0 -
There must be a litter of dead rats somewhere to create such a stench. wouldn't like cleaning up that mess.0
