XP won't start up

I left my laptop loading some drivers and windows updates, when i came back it had switched it self off. Now when i start up it just loops round in normal mode and safe mode, just keep trying to start but can't. Looked for solution and found booting from the XP cd seems the best option, and trying a repair rather than going to the repair in the recovery console.
Is this correct? will it all go back to the way it was?

You'll waste your time going through recovery console, did that myself and stuck with even deeper problem.. Just go through the repair from the GUI installer instead..
Anyway, before going through the repair, try to use the previous good configuration option during the boot up time.. if this doesn't solve your problem, go through the repair as above.0 -
or safe mode and then use windows restore to go back to an earlier restore to go back to a point before the driver update point

Got it up and running in safe mode eventually. tried system restore but it shut itself down once it was restored.
Finally worked after removing the recent windows update programmes that had been added.0 -
make a restore point now and then try windows update again....see how you get on and let us know
you should get windows updates with no problems like that !
I take it you have anti-spyware and anti virus software ??Ex forum ambassador
