There are also private contractors who have dogs that work as sniffer dogs. In a job I had once we were going to get a sniffer dog to check college buses for drugs. We were quoted £350 an hour (£300 for the dog and £50 for the handler). Maybe there is an agency or something that will take on the dog? I can't remember how we got in contact with the sniffer dog.

My springer has passed the initial tests with flying colours ,the trainer was very impressed ,he has now to have a medical and xrays and if he passes these he will then go into training for drug detection more than likely ,If he does not pass I will have him back but so far so good .

Just wondering out of curiosity what happens to army dogs as they get older and don't work anymore? If they've been taken abroad do they get left there, or are they quarantined and rehomed in this country?

The large attack dogs are destroyed when they are to old to work around 8 years of age as they would not be safe as pets .
The others are retired with their handlers in the vast majority of cases or if this is not possible they are rehomed
They return to this country on retirement after they have been quarantined and are not left behind .

That is not always the case, unless the dog is a complete loony. Many retired dogs are used to help train new dog handlers.
