Hi,
My dad's laptop's hard drive died and has been removed so he needs to buy another one. My question is can he replace it with any hard drive to fit or does it have to be exactly the same as the one removed.?
Thank you for your help in advance.

Also it'd undoubtedly need to be a laptop drive, i.e. 2.5" instead of 3.5"."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Although as fas as I'm aware many netbooks still use the 2.5" form factor, even with SSDs. But like you said there are probably quite a few depending on model that use 1.8"."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Hi Tanglefoot
It is an IDE and was for a Toshiba laptop that is 6 years old.

Ok bit late arriving I know!
What model id the laptop? you need to make sure it's not been locked to a particular HDD part number, many laptops are. It's a way of the manufacturer selling a cheap HDD for 2 or 3 times it's true market value. It's my biggest gripe with <manufacturer>, they charge nearly £160 for a 40GB hard drive and because the bios won't allow any other drive, you've no real choice in the matter.
If you post the make/model we can go some way toward establishing whether or not any drive will work. Alternatively just take the model number of the one you removed and try to find one the same.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

it was a laptop from Evesham Tech called a voyager (dont know model no as its been packed away) The HDD that was in it was a 40gb.
dad has put the number of the hard drive in a search and it sends him to a site in germany and you then have to phone them for a quote. I was just thinking it would be cheaper to replace it locally. He will be able to get out the laptop once he comes back from holiday so I will have to post again then.

Provided the laptop isn't configured to accept specific drives, you should be able to get a replacement from almost anywhere.
Here, for example.0
