Sounds more lie a p.c problem.

Click start, click run, type cmd (if your using XP)

It should open a new black screen. In there type ping https://www.bbc.co.uk

It will give you reply times....what are you getting?

What speed connection are you on? What ISP?
  • thankx for quick reply.
times im getting are 23, 18, 17 and 30ms. What does this mean?
Im currently using 1mb NTL, however my desktop computer sharing the wireless network has no problems.

Im currently using 1mb NTL, however my desktop computer sharing the wireless network has no problems.

With NTL, there are two problems:

    1) Depending upon your connections speed, the modem may not be able to handle it. Ie: If you are using 10MB then you will need a modem that can handle it. So the Motorolla SB3100 that they used to rent cannot operate at that speed. You will need to contact tech support and have them exchange it.

    2) NTL use proxy servers which are exceptionally slow. You will need to go here to see how to change your proxy server. There is also a list of NTL Proxy Servers you can use here

    HTH
It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.
  • the thing is that my laptop and desktop have been sharing the wireless broadband with no problems for the last 2 months, and the problem has just started yesterday. also im unable to click on your links due to my problem

Ok. These ping times seem find for 1mb.

You said IE takes ages to open, then the net runs fine. When you open IE does your HDD light flash like mad?

If you browse round bbc.co.uk is it slow? Or is it just slow when you clink links within a page?

Edit** Have you tried ringing NTL and asking if they have a problem with broadband services?
  • Thanks for quick reply.
When i double click IE computer takes about 35-40s for it to load, HDD light flashes as normal. Once loaded internet runs fine. However when i click on a link ( say https://www.bbc.co.uk), page freezes for 30-45, but does not load the requested page, it just stays on that page that i was on before.
    Any ideas??
BTW desktop sharing wireless internet is running fine

Is the computer old? 35-40's is long for IE to open.

Have you scanned for virus? spyware etc?
  • running inspiron 1300, brought 5-6 weeks ago.
Run avg and a number of antispyware software, all clear

You already said one of the computers runs fine?

So theres no problem with the NTL service or it would cause both p.c's to run slow.

Somethings not right, IE should open in about 2-3 seconds on a new p.c
  • yep, i think its a problem with my laptop, but dont know what
