If you're serious about Money Saving then you shouldn't use The Trainline. Simple as.

It really is that simple !

I always use FGW, the charges still go to trainline (who own/run the search engine) but FGW don't charge me to use their site. I always collect the tickets from my local station's machine, if the machine is playing up the booking office will do it.
The train companies often have offers as well, which trainline don't. The recent FGW offer applied to any tickets bought through their site regardless of which rail company you actually traveled with.

I'll never use TheTrainline again after the tickets I bought (Brum to London) weren't valid.

The guard told me that they were for routes "via Banbury" only, and I was on the train "via Reading" (though ridiculously it also stops at Banbury!). He let me off thankfully, but the upshot is that if I click on a time and price, I expect the tickets produced to be valid for that journey! (eg if I book the 11.15 to London I'd expect all the 'clickable blob' pricing options for that time to be valid)

Emailing their CS on the train elicited the response "its up to the user to check the terms and conditions of the ticket blah blah". All well and good, but I'd only got the ticket 5 mins before the journey via the FastTicket machine, and again, the journey shouldn't have been an option on TheTrainline if it's not valid. Simple stuff surely.

    Grr..

I think you'll find it's your reply that is idiotic.
