returning a bike

Loctite blue threadlocker on the bolt before doing up the nut? Thats pretty standard in such instances.
well it didnt have any sort of threadlocker on it.
goldspanners, i said it came from evans cycles not halfords.
i was considering asking them to repair it again, it already has a selaed bottom bracket, the problem was and is the crank arm not staying on the spindle of the bottom bracket because the bolt wont stay tight and the arm keeps working loose
tbh, though, whats the guaranteee it wont happen again? im a bit fed up with this bike and now ive seen a much nicer one in a different shop for the saame price as i paid for this one. so, if i can get a successful refund then i can get a nice shiny new bike0 -

Look's like you should have done your homework first.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
I re-read but wasn't quite sure - Is it a cotter pin that's working loose, like the one being extracted in this picture?
If so a nylock nut and/or threadlocker should sort it.0 -

I wouldn't let this cloud your judgement too much tbh - if they offer to repair again, I'd let them try.
Have to say, though - I had a crank arm start working it's way off on one bike and nothing I did helped...replaced bottom bracket, crank, chainset etc.
I get the impression it might be geometry based and certain frames cause you to exert force in an unusual direction...or something of that nature...0 -
idiophreak, that sounds quite like the problem im having - the p.r. bumf does go on about a special "trial optimised frame geometry"
just to clarify the matter, heres the problem explained pictorally:

This is the bottom bracket spindle on a bike. the crank arm is machined to fit very tightly (by interferance fit) onto the square part. the threaded hole in the middle is for the bolt to pass through to secure the crank arm in place. By tightening the bolt as tightly as you can get it, you crush the crank arm onto the spindle, which is tapered slightly.

The problem i have is that the allen bolt which supposedly performs this function will not stay done up - i can tighten it until it creaks in protest, but after 5 minutes riding it needs tightening again. if i leave it alone, the motion of riding and the way pressure is applied causes the arm to work loose on the spindle and if left long enough, wobble about. like idiophreak says, nothing will fix this - i have had the arm off with a crank puller, cleaned it up and refitted it, but still the problem persists. the crankset i have at the minute that was fitted by the shop after the first one did this is supposedly meant to be very reiable - its a top end shimano job, so i dont see how the cycle shop could rectify it any further. replacing the bottom bracket and crank bearings isnt really viable as they are pressed into the frame so the bike has to be taken to bits first.0 -
So what have Evan's said?
I bet you haven't contacted them today and won't until you get someone saying you should demand a refund.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
i havent contacted them yet, i was going to ask your advice first so i can go in there with the best possible argument and knowledge of my rights
as i said
but if you really feel that strongly about it i shall ring them tomorrow and se what they have to say
and what if i am after a refund? this is a forum about saving money isnt it?0 -
Yeah you said that yesterday and did nowt about it today except F... about on the net. You bought cheap and are paying the price, maybe you should have thought about some cheap insurance if you had a decent bike in the first place.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. well hindsight is a wonderful thing, and it was typicaly the only time that i hadnt locked the old decent bike to anything as i was popping in for a drink that it was stolen. i shall definately ring evans tomorrow and see what they say. as for buying cheap and paying the rpice, its all i could afford and it was supposed to be good - it shared a lot of parts with much more expensive bike (unfortunately i suspect the crank wasnt one of them). we all make mistakes you know.
i think you should heed your own signature0 -
