New spending card needed - declined by Tesco

My brother needs a credit card for some new purchases. He hasn't had a credit card before but has had a phone contract for a long time so we thought his credit file would be good enough for him to try applying for the Tesco 0% purchases card. However he was immediately declined online. He doesn't have any adverse credit and is employed, so I'm guessing they declined him because of a lack of credit history.

I know the advice for a first card is to try your own bank. He banks with Barclays but Barclaycard don't seem to have any long 0% purchases deals. Is there a decent 0% purchases card he might be able to get? Or a super balance transfer card? Or even a low rate purchases card?

Any recommendations?

Has he viewed his credit reports?

Do they show him as being registered on the electoral roll at his current address?

    Hi,

I applied for the Tesco credit card about 2 weeks ago and was accepted straight away. This is my 1st card and the only type of credit history I can think of would be my phone contract and overdraft on my bank account. Maybe it was due to his age or the amount he's earning?
  • I was accepted online for Tesco but then I've got letter demanding P60 and 3 months bank statements. Is this normal for Tesco? My credit history is great, no bad marks at all and everything else in order.

Yes, Tesco (RBS Systems/Underwriting) offer an instant decision but this can be revoked at application verification unit.... so although you may get a yes decision with a limit, they could change their minds and all applications are subject to verification which is where most come unstuck......

Asking for extra income proof is normal if there was a discrepancy or they think you may have exaggerated your actual income. Even after you send it in, they could still decline you.

    ...Tesco (RBS Systems/Underwriting)...
Don't think RBS have anything to do with underwriting this card now do they?...not since they sold their 50% stake in TPF to Tesco.

RBS they are still doing it all at the moment. Still based at the old JCCC is southend-on-sea, i.e. the old natwest (Access) building!
