in Phones & TV
The phones I have were sent to me a few weeks ago from an ebay supplier in error. When I told them they said that the model I had ordered were sold out, full stop. I emailed them a number of times asking them how they wanted to retrieve them but got no reply.
The phones ordered were originally for my in laws and I've managed to get them the ones they needed from another supplier.
I decided to set them up and use for myself. There is a sort of "tinny" tone not like a dial tone coming from the handsets.
Both displays show the batteries fully charged, the hand set number and the within range symbol. When I dial a number it appears on the display and the beeps are heard as it dials the number then it continues with the tone described above. It rings out at the other end but they hear nothing and I still hear the "tinny" tone.
I have checked the power supplier is plugged in both securely and correctly at both the base station the wall socket and the same for the telelphone cable. My old phone is working corrrectly.
I have found a helpline number 0870 605 8047 but understand that they take you post code to check that they have been purchased through a BT shop. (Can't find a geograghical number on saynoto0870 to use with 18866 either).
Can anyone help?
TIA :-)

I have just bought a single BT Studio 500 handset on ebay, handset just does not accept more than 5 digits. I have contacted the supplier (based in Yeovil) to arrange for a return/swap.0

IIRC mine came from a supplier in Yeovil but returning it is not an option for me.
I had a lenghty conversation with a person on the helpline the upshot of which I was told that it probably was a line fault and that I should try the phone in someone elses house.0 -
I acquired the Studio 500 single handset & basestation recently. I was just wondering if there were any secret menus or tricks with this handset? Also is it possible to change the ring tone?0

Also is it possible to change the ring tone?Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

So: someone on ebay took your money but sent you something different from what you ordered. And as if that were not enough, they are defective.
Your first port of call is to contact the seller, but since you didn't get a reply you should invoke the ebay or paypal grievance procedure. Have a good look on the ebay site and you will find the links. Be aware that they only accept complaints within strict time limites, so get moving! You will probably have to pay to send the telephones back by some service that offers on-line tracking, and will not get back all that you paid, but getting back most of your money would be a lot better than beins stuck with defective telephones.0 -
Thanks for your concern and informative reply Voyager2002 but I received a full refund from the supplier for having been sent the wrong model. (Sorry I did n't mention this in my original post). The seller just did n't reply to my emails asking how he intended to recover the phone. There was no way I was going to pay the return postage. I suspect they thought it was not worth their while, this was a power seller with a 99.9% record of thousands of sales.
I was a bit peeved by the fact that the seller was auctioning an item which he clearly either did n't have in stock or could run out of at any time. This is all wrong considering offer and acceptance constitutes a legal contract where there is a consideration i.e a telephone. This is clearly stated to the buyer on ebay when bidding but just seems to be ignored by this seller.
Anyway, the bottom line is I got a free phone which I still have to try on a different line to eliminate a line problem.0
