XP - missing programs!?

i seem to have lost a few programs on my xp home pc. Paint has disappeared, as well as the calculator. all shortcuts to windows media player have gone too. the only way i can access it is launching an mp3.
also if i right click a pic file or mp3 file etc and select 'open with', media player is not listed, nor is paint.
not sure how long this has been like this. ive tried system restore on multiple restore points, but that doesnt work either. all i get is a message saying 'system restore incomplete- no changes were made to your computer'
anyone have any ideas how i can fix this? its got me baffled!

click start > control panel > add/remove windows components and tick what you need/want.
paint is in accessories i think0 -
Go to
Windows Media Player
Start | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Add/Remove Windows Components
Windows Media Player should be there just make sure the box is ticked
Calculator and Paint
Start | Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Add/Remove Windows Components
select Accessories and Utilities| Details
select Accessories | Details -->> Calculator and Paint should be there, make sure they are ticked0 -
