MBNA New purchases.

I have been offered 0% on all new purchases until April 2010 and no fee.
The council I am with allow me to pay my council tax by credit card and am not usually charged a fee for doing this.

Without going into my reasons for doing this do you think MBNA would consider this as a new purchase.

Thanks,
Rupert

It is ok to be considered as 0% purchase. Remember as well that if you are setting up a continuous payment authority then you will have get in touch with the council and request them to cancel the CPA when your 0% time is up.

Probably best not to set a CPA, they can be a pain to cancel.

I just phone up my local council once a month to make the payment. Been doing it for years.

I've been offered the same, but my council now charges a supplement for payment by credit card. Anyone have any other ideas for how to take advantage of this? Apart from actually buying something I wouldn't otherwise buy of course.

Some water & sewage companies accept credit card payments, as do electricity & gas suppliers. You can also pay your home insurance and telephone bills by credit card, not to mention food and petrol.

Depends on how the council process it. It may be treated as a cash advance, which will have whopping fees and whopping interest.

Are you sure? I would be amazed if any merchant could put something through as a cash advance unless it is a bank offering cash/cash-like transactions OR a gambling outfit.

Thanks. Trouble is the card is American Express which a lot of companies don't accept. I've bought a Sainsbury's gift card and put £300 on that, but my phone and Internet supplier (Virgin) doesn't take AmEx, I don't think my water supplier (Thames Water) does, and I get a direct debit discount with my electricity and gas supplier (Scottish Power) which I'd lose if I did this. So perhaps I'll just leave it at that.
