Mr Spratt's post is important - I see that cover as a significant risk, as it doesn't provide fully comp cover. I would only drive under it on a real emergency personally.

    Mr Spratt's post is innacurate!

The driving other cars extension is always TPO, and just the legal cover all drivers must have.

But if it's not mentioned on the certificate, then you don't have the cover!

It will not say on the certificate as such it may say certain sections of the policy schedule are operative such as section a-b-d-e-( also look on the back of the insurance certificate) if you then refer to your policy schedule and look at the appropriate sections to see which ones are active .

It is very difficult for people to advice you as a insurance company will write there insurance certificates and policy schedules differently

    This is not actually correct.

Insurance Certificates are legal documents and the information they contain on their front is set down by UK law. They are a Certificate confirming you are covered against Third Party Risks as required under the Road Traffic Act.

As Quentin says if you have Driving Other Cars it WILL SAY it on the certificate

A Certificate of Insurance will not state which section of the policy are covered eg whether you have Protected No Claims Bonus or how big your excess is (Except sometimes your windscreen excess in a code for the windscreen supplier to understand). A Certificate of Insurance is purely a document proving to the relevant authorities that THIRD PARTY INSURANCE is in place

A policy schedule does not always show whether Driving Other Cars is operative.

Please follow Quentins advice and look at your Certificate of Insurance to see if it is in place, if its in place there will be a section in the POLICY BOOKLET (Normally under the "Liabilities to Third Parties / Others) that explains how the particular Insurer covers driving other cars

I think I should have made myself a bit clearer, as well as checking that it's not in place (which it looks like it's not) I was really interested to know how I'd fare demanding money back as I feel this has been missold to me (def should have been clearer, sorry, not feeling too well!)... when you've checked several times as to whether the cover is in place and it turns out it isn't, it's a little frustrating to have spent an extra £50 on it!

    How old are you?

Is it a specific classic car policy?

Who did you take the cover out with

Demanding your money back may not be the way to go about this.

You are given 14 days to check your documents, and you apparently are now long out of that 14 days.

    I'm 21, and it's a specialist Beetle scheme through NIG/HIC

OK. It looks like you have been let down by the salesperson.

The policy they sold you may well normally allow policyholders to drive other cars, but as posted earlier this is rarely granted by insurers to under 25s.

So your approach may be to point out you were sold this policy (at £50 more than the alternative) so that you could take advantage of the driving other cars section, which you have belatedly discovered is not applicable to you.

It could have been worse - a policeman might have been pointing this out to you before doing you for driving uninsured!

Thank you Quentin :) You've been ever so helpful. I'm paranoid so tend to check everything rigorously before I do something I'm unsure of...just circumstances around taking the policy out were getting on top of me so I just checked the car details and my personal details were correct!

I’d be surprised if the insurance company doesn’t record calls so confirming who said what will be easy
