Does bankruptcy have a big affect on getting a job?

Most job applications that I see tend to ask if you've been declared bankrupt in the past.. can employers use this information to deny offering people a job, or is the reason they ask for something else?

Really? Never come across it. FSA roles understandably need to know, so if you are in that industry then I guess they can ask!
For a small business and a narrow minded employer, it may make a difference. Then so does sex/colour/age etc. Discrimination on any basis is relatively easy. Illegal, but easy. Not so easy to prove it.0 -
I also noticed the question about being solvent on application forms and wondered the same thing.Look down your nose at me and I thumb my nose back at you.

Seriously? Employers are actually asking whether or not you are solvent on a job application form? Hmm, sounds like dodgy employers to me - either leave blank or give the entire job a wide berth - never seen this in any job I've applied for (and I've gotten around a bit career wise!).
Obviously, banking, finance and anything like that is going to be different - as is being a prison officer or one of the (very very few) other jobs you cannot have whilst BR.Do not feed the trolls please.0 -
No, not dodgy, all government apps I have filled in have had it on them.
Oh and I have also worked in finance quite a lot and they have always asked me that question on apps too.Look down your nose at me and I thumb my nose back at you.

Well i must have applied for over 100 jobs this year and have not once been asked that question which in a way i have been surprised about. I guess i could understand it if you are going to work in a bank as i know they have a particular hate for BR's even though they have nearly all gone BR only to be bailed out by the taxpayer.
If a company wants to discriminate against me because i made a mistake in the past then i have to be honest and say i would rather not work for them anyway as its not like i have broken the law in any way.:cheesy: K2nga :cheesy:

Never heard the question being asked myself, you would of thought the odd BR in the financial organisations would be a help rather than a liability, after all he/she could relate to those who are in financial trouble. Imagine if no BRs were allowed on this " money saving " forum to help.0

Is it actually illegal to discriminate against a bankrupt /discharged bankruptin a job search.
Ok-companies may get around it by finding 'other reasons', but again-is it actually illegal ?
If for example-its an fsa job and they are up front about it-fair enough-but otherwise -for a non fsa related job-is it illegal to discriminate ?0 -
I applied for a Data Protection Officer job with the RNLI a couple of months ago and although I didn't get an interview, the job offer would have been subject to a satisfactory credit check.
