Expired Comet Gift card - Advice??

Options
Ok guys try this one for size!!

I went to Comet and bought 2 Big tvs and spent about £1800

I went home and checked on line and discovered if i bought them there it would have saved me £300 for the same 2 items

I went back within the 14 days and said either give me the web price or ill 14 day the items and reorder online they said that they would honour the online price but i would have to take store credit - i wasnt overly thrilled by this but took it as i do like my toys and it would be a good chunk towards a new laptop or something some day.

the store guy never said that the card would expire and although it says on it i did not read it.

if it was £5 or 10 i would not be too bothered but i was not going to spend this until i needed it, but heres the complication. not long after i did this i moved to Northern Ireland for work. we dont have any comet stores here and you cant use the card online - i tried this a while ago so its not like i would have really been able to use it!

I called cust care today (sat to be told that gift card care was closed at the weekend but i need to call back on monday which i plan to. i plan to argue the point that i want to spend more than the value of the card and this would mean i would do it with them than elsewhere.

Anyone got any ideas or experience with this company?

Lesson for the day - read important documents!

You may be offered an extension on the validity of the card, but this would be purely a goodwill gesture.

No you didn't, afterall you didn't come in with 'store credit' you would have entered with cash, and therefore they should have returned you to the situation you were in prior to entering the store. However, Comet and SOGA have never met, as if they did then they would have to accept certain liabilities. So they hold that SOGA doesn't exist, so they don't.

and there in lies the problem, my apologies if that sounds condescending but it's kind of like taking a horse to water, it may not want to drink even though it would be wise to do so.

Generally the understanding here is that they provided you sufficient prompting to read the small print on the card, they would have given it to you in a little envelope thing with some small writing on it, that small writing is NEVER for your benefit. Afterall, if it were, it would be BIGGER would it not.

Good idea contacting them, it sounds like the correct department. I wouldn't go in there all guns blazing, as as far as I can remember as long as they've given you the relevant documentation, then it's upto you if you decide not to read it. Afterall they're making no loss, it's you who will lose out. That's why they prefer 'store credit', as they don't have to give you the money they've got in there coffers .... back! Pretty good chance they never will, so it's just profit!

This one is one of those discretionary things, you really will have to hope the person on the other end is in a compassionate mood, perhaps waiting till after lunch when they're satisfied after a big meal would be the better time to call.

Afterall, you don't want them too alert, a full tummy deprives the brain of oxygen as you're digesting, which might work in your favour ;)

You may like to point out that you were considering the purchase of a .... whatever and that's why you were looking at the documentation knowing full well you could aford to spend a bit more on a top of the range unit. However you were dissapointed to find that you don't have as much and that you'll possibly have to spend elsewhere where they sell cheaper but not as well branded products... who knows, it might work ;)

    Good luck.
It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.

Dammit, how do you do that? I've been trying for yonks to do 'brief and succinct', all my replies look like essays!

    *grumble, grumble!

Was the box that the TV came in unopened? Comet are very very anal about things like that, that may have been why you got credit

Without knowing the full circumstances its hard to judge. What was the return policy instore, whats the back of your receipt say....
Why didn't you check online before going into the store?

I don't see why the store should knock the £300 off. Stores have costs and controls and profits to maintain yet a lot of people on this forum (rather misguided jumped up folk who shop staff tend to ridicule) go ranting about trading standards, sales of goods and legal rights

    Advice?

Read the small print. The store can't be expected to point everything you may need to know out to you, you'd never leave otherwise.
    Squirrel!
If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

ABH, the difference is dmg when she posts knows what she is talking about and clearly does not like the length of her own typing, whereas you waffle on and on and do not have a clue sometimes. When you argued a 5 year old 2nd hand car is new for example?

You know you've edited the above already, but I don't see much of a difference between the two. Here's the before (above) so people can compare and contrast.

Fact is however, I treat each point in turn, you obviously didn't notice that, I believe it's referred to as being 'thorough'. You should perhaps try it, instead of trying to get the facts to match your extremely narrow view.

Well Gordikan it looks like we're not going to be the best of friends afterall. You seem incapable of any light hearted banter, shame.

What's more, despite my providing you with the source of:
S - Sale of Goods Act
    05 June 2006
Sale of Goods Act - The Act of Parliament which sets out the right of consumers to reject new cars which are faulty or not of 'satisfactory quality'. Consumers have around two weeks in which to reject a car. If you think your new car isn't up to scratch, write to the dealer at the earliest opportunity and arrange for it to be returned.

Buyers who purchase their car using finance have longer to reject it, but still only a few months.

Some might say you lack an attention for detail, like putting the above into the OP's context. I still say however, that the distinction is not for me or you to make. It could deliberately be left vague for the very reason you seem incapable of comprehending.

Oh yes and I've noticed you keep following me around, pointing out my typos. I should explain for your and everyones benefit that despite my setting my keyboard repeat rate to the highest, I type way too quickly sometimes, so much so that the computer cache's the key presses but sometimes apparantly misses some or adds. What can I say, other than the keyboard doesn't have any 'letters' on it! http://lmgtfy.com/?q=das+keyboard

But your constant trailing around after me and pointing such out, reduces you to nothing more than Gordikan the Spelling TROLL! You'll get a reputation, then people will start avoiding you and ... oops, I'm doing it again, I'll let you fill in the blanks ;)

    HTH

When you call just say you were saving to buy a large item and did not realize the credit had such a short term available on it. if you are polite and leave your questions open for them to suggest a new full term card you should get it. I had a friend who done it with several gift cards from her engagement that she didn't spend till she married 3yrs later.

    Manners go along way.
slowly going nuts at the world:T
