Depends ~ has the computer EVER worked via the ethernet? Has the computer had its operating system reinstalled inbetween it working and now?

Up until wiring this PC in via ethernet on Saturday it connected to the internet via a plug in usb wireless gizmo that came with the netgear router. As the signal was always very weak to non existant (this PC is just a little too far from the router to get a good signal) I decided to wire it directly to the router via ethernet.

I've disconnected the wireless usb from the tower and can't get on the internet via the ethernet. So I guess in answer to your question ... no, it's never been connected to the internet via an ethernet cable before.

    Jac.

edit: I have re-installed the operating system on this PC but this was about a year ago and i've connected to the internet via wireless since then.

If it wont work via ethernet and youve reinstalled windows id say you need some drivers on the computer. Did you install the drivers that came on a disc with the computer? If not thats what id be suggesting now. It WILL work via a USB wireless as you installed the USB wireless driver

    My mistake !!

This PC WAS connected via ethernet to the internet about 3 years ago, prior to re installing the OS & it worked fine.

Definitely sounds like you need a driver or 2 to get it working

    Neither
As I said ~ the computer should have come with a disc of drivers when it was new
So the ethernet controller etc should be on that disc
    OR
An extra ethernet card has been fitted (ie ~ NOT a part of the motherboard) in which case youd need that particular driver
