My sisters Akita is suffering from constipation i have tried giving him cod liver oil (even gave him olive oil when i couldn't get to the chemist) he still hasn't went. anyone any old tricks that may help him do the business.
What about a fruit or something. have tried massaging his tum but it only makes him comfortable for a few minutes after.
Thanks

firstly - are they sure it is just simple constipation and not something more concerning? Has the dog got a history of this problem, and has the vet seen it?0

If its gone on more than a couple of days, get the vet to see him in case he has an obstruction. Is he drinking enough in this hot weather?0

Due to the hot weather the dog may have become dehydrated so encourage plenty of fluids and lots of exercise as this encourages the bowels.
If this doesnt work try a warm bath ( the dog that is) warm water that covers the dog especially abdomen is soothing and will help the dog relax and pass the stool
If all of this fails i would see a vet as there may be an obstruction( has it eaten a bone, small toy etc)
DO NOT GIVE IT HUMAN LAXATIVES THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS
Hope the dog is better soon0 -
He has seen the vet the other day got the usual keep an eye on him plenty of water and said to use the oil as i do on my own dogs. Just not doing anything for him. He has the vets next week too.foreign_correspondent wrote: »firstly - are they sure it is just simple constipation and not something more concerning? He seems to be having constipation regularly recently vet said it's just his age changing his bowel habits. We have tried adding more veg etc to his diet which we thought had been working. He has been stressed recently when my sis was admitted to hospital he was not happy at all, thought her return would have helped but he still has not went.slowly going nuts at the world:T0 -
I would be tempted to call the vet again and ask for advice over the phone - there could be an underlying problem causing it, and we could advice something which would exacerbate it....0

May be you should ask the vet about a change of food too. How old is the dog?0

I think you should take him back to the vets. Perhaps ask the vet for some liquid paraffin? We had it when our cat had bowel problems and im pretty sure its suitable for dogs aswell. Just softens the stools i think. What matters most is how well you walk through the fire0

Not long back from the vets and thought i would update, he still hasn't done the business but is a lot more comfortable.picklepick wrote: »I think you should take him back to the vets. Perhaps ask the vet for some liquid paraffin?
The vet emptied his glands(yuck) checked his tum etc and gave him a pain killer/anti inflammatory, so hoping he will go sometime tonight. If not back to vets again tomorrow to get him an xray just to be safe. vet mentioned the parafin but as we had tried other things to no affect they will skip it.
