tanith - if your DW is making your pots dull on the outside you should make sure that you polish them with a tea towel when you take them out of the machine. Apparently its something to do with the salts in the water (I can't remember the details as my mum passed the message on to me from someone she was buying saucepans from!)

We usually run our dishwasher on low temperature setting. That works fine but we find its best to run a hot cycle wash at least once a week to prevent grease building up and nasty smells appearing.

One thing's for sure, though - the timesavingness (is that a word?) of the dishwasher makes it pretty much a must-have as far as I can see. I'd have thought it saves me around 2 minutes per plate or bowl in total - and whilst I probably only use 6 per day (between me and gf), that's 12 minutes per day, an hour per working week - and that's before you start faffing around with cuttlery...

Are you being serious? 2 minutes saved? How long does it take to wash a bowl or a plate? 5 seconds? 10 seconds max surely?

The study included costs that you wouldn't perhaps think about: buying tea towels, cost of washing/drying/ironing them etc, etc..

Surely no-one irons tea towels? :)

Several years ago a German University did a proper investigation into this. They found that a dishwasher was appreciably cheaper and more hygenic than doing it by hand.

Many people don't realise how much water they waste doing it by hand, in most houses you send a couple of gallons down the drain before the hot water gets to you !

Are dishwashers still cheaper when you take into account the cost of buying them? I would find that hard to believe. And more hygeinic? I wonder how many people die from poorly washed up plates in this country? And as for the cost of buying, washing etc. tea towels I would have to assume this was a study commissioned by dishwasher manufacturers.
By all means use them if you must but why argue an environmental case for a machine which does something you can do by hand in ten minutes?

My elderly relative needs a dishwasher - her idea of washing up is rattling a dish around in some lukewarm water for a few seconds, then it gets dried with the same old teatowel as yesterday's dishes. She does suffer with stomach upsets - I don't cos I always wash the cups properly before making anyone a cup of tea in her house - strangely I'm never thirsty when she offers o do it.

Our dishwasher uses less than a bowl of water to wash two days worth or more of our dishes.Using less than one unit of electricity.

So no need to put how water on or boil a kettler for it, I know what one I'm sticking with.

Hi we use our dishwasher when completly jam packed full which is every 2-3 days as there is only 2 of us, I use Lidl washing tablets £1.79 for 30 and also the Eco 50 setting. my dishwasher has "sixth sense" which means its constantly adjusting the levels to be as eco as possible. I am on a water meter and am very careful with water. I would use the dishwasher everytime instead of washing up much more econmical and also you use less teatowels!!

Yes we'll have a water meter in our new flat. I'd never heard of economy 50 before - shows how much I know about dish washers, so I'm assuming that's a setting that uses a minimum amount of water? lol
