Dishwashers should use less water than handwashing if properly used (ie only put on when full). I use the lowest temp possible (30 deg) and the shortest cycle (about an hour).

I have to say there are only 2 of us and I said I'd never use it for just us. But now I think it's amazing and complain if I go anywhere that doesn't have one :)

Thanks for all your replies :)

Something that I suddenly thought of though, is how much electricity the dishwasher would use? Does anyone know about this?

Somewhere there is a thread with all the specifics of hand versus dishwasher I couldn't find it.. but it came out that the dishwasher is cheaper taking everything into account as long as you fill it before using it... so I guess its up to your preference... I prefer to fill it and turn on every 2 or 3 days.. I do my pots by hand though as I found it takes the shine off the outside of saucepans... I wonder why that is because my glasses are still sparkling after years of being in the dishwasher..

I will certainly have to get used to filling the dishwasher up and then turning it on every few days lol, I'm so used to washing up straight after every meal.

    Thanks :D

Several years ago a German University did a proper investigation into this. They found that a dishwasher was appreciably cheaper and more hygenic than doing it by hand.

Many people don't realise how much water they waste doing it by hand, in most houses you send a couple of gallons down the drain before the hot water gets to you !

The study included costs that you wouldn't perhaps think about: buying tea towels, cost of washing/drying/ironing them etc, etc..

Guess this depends a lot on how you wash your stuff manually...I'm an incredibly un-economical "manual" dishwasher..I hate the idea of having a bowl full of manky old foot bits floating around all the stuff in there, so I wash everything under a running tap...And I'm quite OCD about washing every surface thoroughly, watching how easily water drains off it etc...With that in mind, I've little doubt that my using the dishwasher is much more economical. If you're one of these people that washes everything in a cupfull of cold water, I'm sure it's probably more economical to keep doing that.

One thing's for sure, though - the timesavingness (is that a word?) of the dishwasher makes it pretty much a must-have as far as I can see. I'd have thought it saves me around 2 minutes per plate or bowl in total - and whilst I probably only use 6 per day (between me and gf), that's 12 minutes per day, an hour per working week - and that's before you start faffing around with cuttlery...
