This is how to setup security on Wireless with a Netgear router.

The same principles apply to any router (i.e. The linksys), but if you are buying a netgear mp3 server, it might be better to get a netgear router (they are a few quid more though).
These instructions are for WPA (the most secure), but from the link you posted, it hints that only WEP is supported, if so, then you just put in a WEP key instead of WPA.
On the top right of the mp3 gizmo link, there is a link for online advice, if you have any further questions about the MP3 server.
You may not need a wireless card for your PC, as it may be able to pick it up from a wired connection to the router.. not sure though.., the supplier may be able to answer this, or look on the netgear site.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
AGH!!! You what??
I really appreciate your help but I am being a little slow on this one I think......!!albertross wrote:These instructions are for WPA (the most secure), but from the link you posted, it hints that only WEP is supported, if so, then you just put in a WEP key instead of WPA.
How would I know what is WPA and what is WEP?? I would prefer to get something decent and have no idea at all what to buy but that was just something I stumled accross...??albertross wrote:On the top right of the mp3 gizmo link, there is a link for online advice, if you have any further questions about the MP3 server.
thanks for this, i may have to have a look into this, altho I not even sure this is the right gizmo for me, i really just wanna give someone a birthday present where they can play MP3s on a wireless gadget thingy but not really sure what to buy to be honest, i should apologise again, i am being really daft here but not had to set up a wirelss thangy b4??albertross wrote:You may not need a wireless card for your PC, as it may be able to pick it up from a wired connection to the router.. not sure though.., the supplier may be able to answer this, or look on the netgear site.
Thanks, I dont understand what you mean here, I have a broadband modem at the mo which is why I was suggesting getting another bit to go in my PC, is that the router bit you are on about??
Thanks so much for answering my thread tho, I am sorry for being such a pain and not really knowing what is going on here!! :eek:Official DFW Nerd 2100 -

A broadband router replaces your usb modem, it will make your network wireless, and also has 4 wired ports to plug the pc in directly.

There is a review of the netgear kit here.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/03/15/review_netgear_mp101/
According to the review, it scans the airwaves, then picks up your router, and any machines connected to it..
Most (if not all) modern routers support WEP and WPA.

Thanks for this! I think this is the wrong time of night to be working out what is going on here! The birthday in question is on Tuesday so I have got to jump through hoops to make something appear by then!
Oddly enough I was just looking at that article on 'the registry' site, but still dont think that any stores wll have this stuff in stock for me to collect on Monday...
The only hope that I have is this one...
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?ngr-mp101&P=0
But this is a lil more pricey than I was hoping to pay, especially if I am going to have to buy the other bit as well! (what sort of price should I expect to pay for that??)
thanks again for your help albertross!!Official DFW Nerd 2100 -
The routers are in the region of £50-70, ebuyer sell some cheaper ones, but you'd be pushing it to get it for Tuesday..
The linksys one from PC World would probably be ok.. another forum member had a range problem with that model, so I'm a bit wary of recommending it..Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
thanks once again!
I think I am going to hit the sack now as my brain is fried trying to sort this all out... was hoping to have reserved something at my local PC world store and pick it up tomorrow/Monday but there isnt ant#y of those music things in stock
Back to plan B i guess.... pair of socks and CD! :S
