I'm 31 and have no idea what sort of job I'd like to do. All I've worked out so far is that I'm not a career person, I am more interested in my homelife. All the jobs I've had I kind of fell into them with no planning. I'm doing well at my current job but if I get made redundant I have no idea what to do next.

Do people really plan to become things like "Procurement Manager" or "HR Manager"? That's their life ambition? No offence to anyone in procurement or HR but I cannot see anything interesting or attractive about these sorts of jobs. I can't see 18 year olds saying they'd really love to be a Procurement Manager.

I decided to ask my youngest son what he wanted to do...his reply was "CEO of a Newspaper or comic"

He's started young, he already has his own newspaper (with it's own brand and artwork) and a comic (again already branded), does all the artwork and research himself and then sells them to his school friends!

Mind you, he is scary intelligent...it was once suggested I teach him at home, no blooming way, he is way ahead of me in some things (he knows about profit margins, trade prices, distribution, work out what to charge based on materials used and can do presentations etc) and I am no slouch in the intelligence stakes!
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

I'm heading towards 60 and I have absolutely no idea what a Procurement Manager does. In fact when I look through the jobs page of the local rag I do not have a clue what most of the job titles involve.

    A bit off topic but......
What I can't work out is how Tesco got so big? How farmers accepted getting paid 3p for a battery chicken. How they manged to take over the country and destroy communities whilst people believed it was because they were better and shinier and ''Best Value'? They grew on the 'busy-ness'' of us all..no time to shop at different places culture that came from ever working longer hours.

I have a Power of One thing going down though. I don't shop there. Won't make much difference..but would if others folowed suit.
I'll raise you to the power of 3. We won't shop there either if we can help it. Was forced to on holiday once as we couldn't find anywhere else  There is a 24 hr one fairly close to us and we have never been inside it, but I have a weakness for pineapple squash and Sainsbury seem to have stopped doing it, and to my horror Tesco have it on their website, but nobody else that has a branch close enough seems to sell it either. What a dilemna.

How much do you love it, and how much do you hate tesco? We could, I'm sure, track down a recipe. :o This one sounds lovely, and you could of course, ditch the extras (but would probably ned to scale down the sugar),

What I can't work out is how the supermarkets get away with pretending price wars are going on? As far as I can tell, all supermarkets are making huge profits. One for the competition commission?

I have a sneaky feeling that the comp commission indulge in lots of management speak, procurement training (what is that?...to do with 'getting' things?) and paper shuffling. They all know that rule in economics about undercutting the competitor and they could kill each other off if they chose to......but have settled into a friendly Big 4 situation....Tesco may up the stakes soon though......wipe out one so it becomes 3....just to ensure it's future.

The only way is for the little guy to action Power of One within his/her shopping habits and work (if he/she runs his own enterprise) and do teh best he/she can.

Note how corp PC I was putting a '/' between he/she.:D

LIR I would buy your soft fruits and chickens but you are far, far away...also, did you get my PM from elswhere? It got stuck in outbox and I couldn't work out if it sent? It was just a thanks.

Well, it is like this. I don't like water alone, and pineapple is the only flavour I have found that I can drink in the sort of quantities needed during hot weather like last week. I hate Tesco and all that they stand for. I buy as little as possible in supermarkets generally, and get fresh stuff from the local shops that I can walk to, including the Co-op which I am a member of and I do feel has a better ethical stance.

I never thought of making my own squash! And me a regular on Old Style. Mmmm. That looks easy enough, and the greengrocer often has limes in the reduced box!

I have Nescafe addiction..it's very embarrassing. I can only drink v expensive, very unfairtrade espresso instant coffee..only available from Asda and Waitrose. Son has a go at me every time (also for buying the Mail on Sunday) something to do with Africa and breast feeding.
