Ker...ching!

Is it just me, or are people finding the wave of "tribute" items for the recently deceased Mr Jackson just a little in poor taste?

"Rememberance wristbands" (#320390163751)

"Moonwalking in heaven" tote bags (WTH?)

Copies of the New York Times, even The Sun...!

I searched eBay hours after his death was announced, and took a look at newly listed items. There was a shedload! Going back through the results to the hours before his death, it appeared that there had been a sharp sharp rise after the news filtered through. Even then people were trying to sell copies of newspapers announcing his death for $100 apiece, and I was surprised at how disgusted I felt. I was also surprised to see advertisements for memorial tshirts too, bearing in mind that the guy wasn't even cold yet.

So, short answer, yeah, I do think some of the things people have come out with are in very poor taste. I guess it's human nature to want to make something though. Either that or there's more Ferengi in some people than others.

The music industry has been making money from fans for years, don't you think they are all planning hundreds of 'new' albums and re releasing old ones as we speak? Even his family and friends are selling stories to the tabloids.

AS long as the items in question are not in poor taste then I say good for them, I just wish I had things I could list.

It happens to everyone famous, I read a few years back that the china and collectable manufacturers were getting a little concerned at how long the late Queeen Mother was living as it meant all their half completed stock that was ready to go at the first announcement had to be updated with new portraits every few years. I can't find it on snopes so maybe there is a grain of truth in it?

What about the Diana memorial dolls that were officially sanctioned?

I had a 'collectable' George Harrison badge from 1972, still in wrapping which i listed shortly after his death, It sold...for 99p! to someone in America. Gutted! I've kept that years!!

I'm really annoyed that i had atleast 4 copies of Micheal Jackson Moonwalker game for Mega Drive and gave them away just a matter of months ago due to not being worth selling then!!
If google doesn't know it, how should i?

I sold the badge as i was selling my whole badge collection at the time, didn't just list the one, but was annoyed it was the lowest selling item of the lot and i got more for an old 'school dinners are cool dinners badge' and a 'cable cat' badge!

And no, i won't be compassionate about Jacko as was never a fan, and sick of hearing about him now!

As someone who listed a Big Brother 3 DVD less than three hours after the death of Jade Goody was announced I don't think I'm in a position to comment... ;)

There's always going to be dubious 'tribute' items, and if there wasn't a market for such tat then nobody would bother making them in the first place.

If the fans don't sell these items I am pretty sure the Jackson family and publicity departments will.
