Am I entitled to any Housing Benefit? (figures included)

The calculator seems to think so, but I'm not sure. Here are my figures.

Wage: £14,000pa = £1166pm = £269 per week (All before tax - and my only source of income)

Rent £425 per month (LHA applicable amount = £395)

Council tax £883 per annum (includes 25% single occupancy discount)

No dependants, savings or anyone else living with me, 29 years of age.

Do I qualify for anything? Thanks.

I wouldn't have said so either.

How much did it say you were entitled to? It's only a guide and can be a few pound out.

Well, a single person over 25 is allowed £64 a week, then £5 of your earnings are ignored.
So you're left with £200 a week over the limit.

This is then "tapered" at 65%, leaving £130.

If the final figure was less than your rent, you would get the difference as HB, as it's more, you get none. :o

Thought that was the case. Thanks. Dunno what the calculator is playing at, it said I would be entitled to £28 per week - thought it sounded generous!

You won't qualify because you've done things the right way, you have a job and no kids, I think it's an unfortunate state of affairs and I'm sorry if I've offended anyone but it's just the way I feel

Currently the OP earns £222 per week net and pays out 17 in council tax and £98 in rent, leaving £107 per week for everything else.

If he weren't working, he'd receive £65 JSA and pay £7 per week rent out of that, leaving £58 per week for everything else. Plus he'd be exempt from NHS charges, assuming he has an NHS dentist and needs prescriptions/opticians.

Are you suggesting the latter is a better option for him?

Absolutely not, all I am saying that single people who work and maybe even get quite a low wage get no help at all.
My daughter is in a rented house, she doesn't get a high wage but she gets no help apart from the single persons reduced rate on council tax.

She only has one pretty low wage coming in but has to pay for everything herself and I'm extremely proud of her. However if she had a child she would be able to work less hours be able to claim all sorts of benefits and would most probably be better off, if she didn't work at all she'd most probably get her rent etc paid for her, it just doesn't seem fair to me. In fact some of her friends who have part time jobs and a child are far better off than her as they have a lot more money coming in every week, don't have to pay for dentists etc it seems to me that if you do things the right way you are punished, mind you she has her pride and thats good

Are you seriously suggesting that we should pay benefits to more and more people, costing taxpayers more and more money?

It might be the "way you feel" but I suspect you haven't really thought it through.

Yes I have thought it through, it seems those that try get nothing however those who aren't willing to try get everything, it gives no encouragement to people to go out and look for work as many find they can claim and be better off not working, you only have to read some of the posts on here to see that.
I've decided not to look in this section again as it makes me depressed

But I have shown you how the OP would not be better off on JSA...

Most people would be proud their child was working and paying her way (that is how it is supposed to be btw), not depressed because she can't get benefits!
