Vw Car Servicing - Is It Needed ?

I have a 3 year old VW polo which I have recently bought outright . It needs it 2 year major service . When I phoned the garage to book the service it said it would cost around £270 , possibly extra !! I realise that VW garages are expensive but am I been conned ? - does it have to be taken here as its a VW car . I know zero about cars !! Or should I phone around kwik fit etc . She said that they use some special oil so I don't want to harm my car in any way

Thanks

  • you can probably get away with going to any garage for a service - but it depends on what a 2-year major service involves - belts + fluids + discs + more, potentially. How many miles on the clock?

FWIW you're probably out of warranty and a documented and proper service elsewhere will result in stamp in the book and potentially less hit to the pocket....
In the United Kingdom 200,000 people are bitten by dogs every year and some people will die as a result. Of those bitten, 70% are children... So the question has to be asked....... Has the time come to ban children?
  • If you want to take it to a main dealer then call 2 or 3 local VW dealers to compare costs however, to save paying over the odds I would take it to a non-franchised garage. As long as the servicing book is stamped it won't have a negative effect on the cars value. Ask around at work/local pub etc for recommendations for a good local garage.

With regards to the "special oil" this is used by Polo's follwoing the "LongLife Service", if required a non-franchised garage can supply it too as well as Halfords etc. Also, if your car is 3 years old it will require an MOT if it hasn't already got one.

Thabks for the advise . I just phoned VW and they said it will be an extra £60 for a brake fluid change , as my brakes felt a bit spongy. Its starting to add up! However the full VW service history is good to , especially as I may part exchange in 2 years . And my MOT needs doing - had forgotten about that !! Cheers

I have a VW Golf, bought new Jan 2004 with servicing required every 2 yrs or 20,000 miles. Warning came on dashboard last summer after 15,000 miles saying service needed. Had it done and asked why was car sold with servicing needed every 2 yrs or 20,000 miles and was told "it must be the way I drive!". A few weeks ago at 23000 miles, the service warning light came on again and I rang a different VW dealer to book the service. The guy I spoke to there said, why do you want it servicing again so soon, you only had it done last summer. I explained about the warning light and he said, call into the garage and just have service warning light re-set. Much cheaper than paying for a service whcih I am sure it didn't need. Just wonder how many other people have cars serviced unnecessarily, just because dashboard says it needs doing.
