My problem is i have a UK licence with my parents address on it and now live in France and the dvla dont change addresses to abroad. I have cc's registered both in the UK and my home address in France. I was going to hire from Hertz but wanted to buy seperately the insurance to cover the excess from a different company. The cheap ones seem to be when you live 150km away which i do but in terms of hiring the car dont as i will i take it have to use the UK address as its on my licence and i dont want problems getting the car. How can i solve this? i dont want to take the insurance then its considered invalid with different addresses

any help gratefully received

Swap your licence for a French one, sorted.

Sounds to me as if you don't have a legal residence in the UK and hence you are trying to commit a fraud

I thought in France you were suposed to obtain a French licence if you were staying mor ethan 6 months anyway.

I am sure when you wrote that you didn't mean it to sound the upsetting way it came across as the whole point of my post was that I want to be correct when I hire the car. Check the DVLA website ... they do not change addresses when you move abroad. My bank are also totally aware I live in france and happy for me to leave a UK contact address.

This might be helpful for some ... the European directive which states that all member states should recognise licences regardless of which country they were issued. There is no requirement at all to change a UK licence when living in another EU country.

Perhaps my post wasn't clear I want the insurance to show i live in france, I want to hire the car using my french registered card, my only issue is ... are car hire firms fine with the address on the licence being a UK one is you say actually i live in france? It is my first time hiring a car and maybe its a simple thing for someone who has done it before to know.

Any other expats would also have faced this situation and could advise of their experiences that would be welcome.

Re you have to change the licence after 6 months ... you have to register a car that you have brought from the UK to france if it is here for 6 months plus perhaps that is what you were thinking of?

No, my mate was working over there and got stopped by the police - gave him quite a hard time as he had been there 12 months and still on UK licence.

Regarding your original question I am not sure how you can do it as your licence is also used as a form of ID to secure the car. Oly way to find out for sure is call a hire car co and ask the question.

You have to have the address you actually live at on your licence, if thats not in UK you can't keep a Uk licence. You do not have the option to have another persons address (not even your parent's) on it.
Accept the insurance offered and keep your head down.
