Hi, i've been where you are so no how you feel, i agree about sainsburys basics, i,d recommend basics teabags at 28p for 80 and also disposable razors which my hubbie now uses that are 13p (i think) for 5 also tinned chopped toms are great value -- good luck

Can't vouch for the Asda one but it's absolutely clear from observing the ingredients of the 7p Sainsbug jar of curry that it is heavily subsidised by the retailer. The post below was in response to a poster who had suggested that she would stick with Sharwoods sauce as that sort of must be 'better' for you. The results are slightly surprising. :D

That is a lot of fat compared to the cheaper one! It would be interesting to see the same info for the Asda one as a comparison.
If you will the end, you must will the means.

the asda one has 3.8g saturated 1.6g per 100g, maimly water. tomato puree, sultana's, onions and flavourings. Used to be 13p per has rolled back to 7p. To be honest would never of tried it but stayed at our friends a few mnths ago and she dished up lovely curry for tea. saw posh label popadoms on the side and then in the bin this smart price jar

What more can i say, would certainly prefer a nice indian takeaway but for a cheep mid week tea:confused:

When you go to buy eggs in Sainsbury's have a look at the basics eggs! Yes that's right. Usually they are barn eggs - marked with a 2 at the beginning of the code stamped on the egg. Recently I seen both free range (1) and organic (0) eggs in the basics box!!
6 free range organic eggs for 88p - bargain!!

    It's only a game

Can vouch for Sainsbury's own brands being economical but generally good. Tesco's aren't too bad either.

I would draw the line at the jar of curry 'sauce' at Asda for 7p though. I can't help thinking all you're getting with that is a jar of chemicals and god knows what other junk. I mean, come on, 7p? How can they make anything approaching decent for that? It's important to get best value when you're on a tight budget, but you must put decent food inside you or you'll become ill. Just my twopenneth worth.;)

Sorry but how do you know what the curry will be like till you try it, seems loads like the Sainsburys Basic one and that is only 5p, I've bought one but not tried it yet, but for less than 10p theres nothing lost if it is uneatable. Don't mean to sound grumpy a few months back I would have said the same, I used to buy all premium brands costing an absolute fortune, now still buy premium but also a lot of own brand and basics now and finding them all ok. :)

Find Curry Queens recipe for curry sauce , not sure on the price comparion with the basic curry sauce ( have only tried Tescos and it was vile ) , but has to be much cheaper then the other brands , and much better for you

I would recommend that you try Waitrose and their new essentials range, myself and my OH have stopped going to Sainsburys and now go to Waitrose, and we have found that we spend a little less at Waitrose and the quality of the food far exceeds Sainsburys and it is a whole better shopping experience!

With respect, the OP wishes to reduce her monthly spend from £450 to £200. It's a big step and I'm not entirely convinced Waitrose Essentials would be the way to go here . This is absolutely nothing to do with their perceived quality, it's the price we are looking at here. And Sainsburys basics prices are far cheaper than Waitroses' equivalent, essentials (we have some experience of Waitrose essentails prices, btw, as we tend to pick them up for 50% off at the supermarket overstocks shop we use.) If you spend less at Waitrose than Sainsburys then I'm assuming you weren't buying basics brand?

yes with such a good choice of local stores i would advise popping in to a different one each time, or whichever one you are going past and have a spare 10 minutes, run in and grab the latest bargains, reject anything that isnt a deal because its likely another store will have it on offer.

each store provides a different shopping experience, enjoy it !

See it as a "buying raid", your toddler will love whizzing round in the trolley! if you try to buy all your week's shopping in one go from one place, you will be ripped off on many items and left with a predictable decomposing and unappetising fridge/cupboard/freezer full that you work your way through grudgingly until you can afford the money or time to shop again.

as a species, we humans are not designed to enjoy stock piles of saved food, except maybe for that security of survival in winter, we are hunter/gatherers by nature and our natural instinct is to bring home fresh produce every day. (try fitting that in with a busy modern lifestyle though!)
