Perhaps because Acronis is far and away the market leader, award winning and has reliability beyond reproach?
There are free tools that are good and I am always up for free stuff, eg OpenOffice & GIMP but I only use Acronis for backups single & incremental and creating restore disks, been a user for over 10years.

Thanks for your comments. I will take a look inside the tower but it does not sound like a fan to me at the moment. It would be wonderful if it was, so keep your fingers crossed for me.

My PC did not come with an XP disc just the software that was loaded on to it i.e. MS Works. Good to know that I could get hold of a copy still.

Even if not straight away, there will be a time when I need to look at replacing. Is there any site you know of which takes you through transferring from one to another in simple steps for a novice to follow?

That would depend on the source of the problem. If it's the HDD then this might be sufficient, but should something else be the cause things might become a little more complicated.

That looks beyond me I'm afraid but thanks anyway.

I will copy it and keep it just in case.

Also, just in case, what is the situation with older software and Vista. Should the PC die on me I will need to know that for anyhting I end up buying.

If I bought something with Vista loaded could it be replaced with XP or would that be a daft thing to do?

I know I am asking for solutions to problems I may not have but I like to know what my options are in advance. It allows me to sleep at night ;)

Because of the Trojan problem, I would be wary of cloning the drive.

If the HDD is failing(just take off the side panel and listen closely), I would simply purchase and fit a new one. Use the old one with an external case or fit it internally if possible.

Then you can copy any info over in your own time.

All the aforementioned programs are available from members and from websites such as oldversion and filehippo, as long as you keep your licences.

So you can reinstall and replace email profiles etc.

This might be able to answer that particular question, for 32-bit versions of Windows at least.

Some computers are available with a 'downgrade' option though such a thing is unlikely to survive the release of Windows 7, so you'd better be quick if you want one of those. You can still buy Windows XP separately, but like the aformentioned it's not likely to be around for much longer.

Your biggest problem may be insuring you have licences/ keys and the original programs to install to the new HDD/PC all your data and documents that will need to be transferred over.

Fortunatley, I do have them. It is just XP which I do not have as I don't recall getting it with my Packard bell PC.

I've heard this kind of noise, it's normally the fan in the power supply (psu;)). Look in it for full build-up around the grills, fans and breather holes. If you can, take it out of the case (the psu that is, and leave that intact! Health and Safety you know) and probably the house if you can, they can get very dusty.Gget as much out as you can with the hoover, brush into all holes with a long bristled soft (dry:D) paintbrush and tap firmly every side a few times with the paintbrush handle. Re-hoover. You hopefully find the noise gone or much less.

Then start looking for a replacement psu, your fix wont last long;).
