Faulty Camera - help needed
For Christmas I bought my husband a samsung digital camera. It was on special offer in Comet. He didn't use it until our holiday - just got back on Sunday and extremely jet-lagged. The camera doesn't work properly. It has an intermittent fault and won't always contact to his computer. Took it back to Comet today and was told I have to contact the manufacturer Samsung myself. Is this right? Given that it was a present I'd rather get a refund and then let him choose his own camera. Can anyone help me and advise me what my rights are? Does it make a difference that it's over 6 months old? Thanks in advance

I had just finished typing some advice out for another poster here. You may as well have a copy too I suppose ;) I've never dealth with Comet and cameras before, but it shouldn't be that much difference.

You will need to write to the following address:

    Comet Group PLC
    Criterion House
    George Street
    Hull
    HU1 3AU

You could use one of the sample letters here:
http://www.which.co.uk/advice/unders...ters/index.jsp be sure to include in the letter that you wish to have the camera repaired at NO cost to yourself, that it has been used within the manufacturers specification around about 7 days later you'll get a letter back detailing that they will consider their options after inspection 'as a gesture of goodwill' or more than likely considering the size just replace, or drop the item in for repair.

If however they don't then expect a pointlessly slow drawn out process whereby they will suggest that it's not their problem its yours and how you should have purchased a warranty etc. They may even offer you one at a discount. If they don't offer to repair it, then there's always moneyclaimonline.gov.uk for you too.

It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.

You don't have a right to a refund, however you do have the right for it to be repaired or replaced. Your contract is with Comet, so take it back to them again and explain you would like them to deal with it, as per the Sale Of Goods Act. Don't let them try and fob you off by telling you that you have to deal with Samsung directly...

What if the computer is at fault and not the camera? I have access to 3 PC\'s and often have problems connecting my camera to one of them and the other 2 are fine.

Thanks for the replies. Don't think it's the computer as luckily our daughter took her camera and that connected to the computer just fine. So we've still got some holiday photos.

Please try your camera and its software in other computers...just because other cameras work really does not mean a lot.

A workaround to the problem would be to buy a card reader.

I rather expect that it will be repaired via Samsung, and the person you saw in store wasn't too bright and didn't consider that they might be able to book it for you

If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

Have you checked the Samsung website to see if this is a known problem? It may be a software fault that can fixed my downloading updated software from Samsung's website.
